First Impression of Romania: the Mediaeval Town of Sibiu

Romanian reissu alkoi pienellä Sibiun kaupungilla, jonne oli suoria lentoja Madridista. Ja vau, mikä kaupunki toisessa päässä odottikaan!

This Romania trip began with the town of Sibiu to which there were direct flights from Madrid. And WOW what a town I was about to visit!

Getting from the airport to the city centre was a little adventure itself. Of course it would have been easy to take the first taxi you see when you step out of the airport, but I opted for public transport since I knew the bus number already - that's enough, right? Too bad I had to idea where to get off and where my hostel was, but luckily a nice Romanian guy helped me google everything I needed to know. I then somehow magically stumbled across my hostel while of going around in circles and was close to crying tears of joy! All's well that ends well. Bus number 11 takes you from the airport to the city centre for 2leu (=€0,43) ja the tickets must be bought in a small yellow box at the bus stop. Make sure you have small enough cash because the machine only accepts 1leu and 5leu notes.

The city hall

B13 hostel was pretty empty. In fact, I had a 6-bed dorm to myself which was more than fine by me, since I was a bit tired after travelling and confused of the new language, currency and people. It was a strange feeling to be one of the few tourists in the town. At least there were no queues or overcrowding! The landmarks that attracted me the most were the Lutheran church, Orthodox church, Council tower, main shopping street Nicolae Balcescu and the Liar's Bridge, which were all in the city centre. I'm probably an uncultured individual but I just can't be bothered with all the art museums however gorgeous they are...

Getting up to the council tower and Lutheran church tower was quite an experience. Their creaky, shaky stairs, no one around and the mystical music made it nearly scary. The real cherry on the top were the pigeons that were waiting for me at the Lutheran church's tower. After admiring the view for a while, I turned my head and realised one was inside! Eek! After fumbling there for a while, a Corean traveller appared and came to save me, guiding the pigeon back to the open air. No wonder the windows have the text they have! It was interesting to find a Lutheran church in Eastern Europe. Then again, Sibiu has a long German tradition, as well as German schools and even a German name (Herrmannstadt) so it only makes sense.

Houses in Sibiu have eyes!

I like to take plenty of pictures while travelling, so I was shocked to realise I left my selfie stick home. We're talking about a fairly small town (150 000 inhabitants) which is why I didn't think I'd find a new stick there... until I bumped into this bric-a-brac shop, which we have in Madrid, too. And that's where I found my new photography stick! Rosa was all over the moon because she could start to capture herself on film again. Talking about finds, I also stumbled across this reptile exposition with snakes, geckos, turtles and even an alligator, since I didn't know what to do before leaving Sibiu. It was the perfect way to end my stay in this one-night destination and head towards Brasov.

This is where I found my selfie stick - a huge bazar called Galeriile comerciale PACEA

And this is one of the little guys I saw at the exposition

Ensi kerralla katsotaan sitten Brasovin maisemia ja eri linnoja, joita tuli nähtyä kolme kappaletta siellä. Hyvää torstaita kaikille!

Next time we'll take a look at Brasov's scenery and different castles, as I got to see three altogether. Happy Thursday everybody!

First Christmas in Finland Since 2014

Kukkuu.

Hello! Here we are, back in Madrid after a nice little Christmas break "break". I have to say it was a bit miserable to spend nearly all my time studying for exams, writing a photo analysis and finishing my French literature assignment during those two weeks when I finally went back to Finland for Christmas. Practically, we have the whole of January off, so that's just a few weeks of exams and then we're on holiday before spring term. How exciting. I don't understand the logic behind it, but this is how Spain has decided to organise stuff.

First time at the main square at wintertime in three years - this time in a little blizzard!

Kuopio market hall all christmassy - notice the guy sweeping off snow after being outside!

I had my first exam the day before yesterday and that was the worst one out of the way: Medieval and Renaissance French literature. My assistance in lectures was pretty non-existent and the texts written in old French were so complicated I didn't really bother reading them, so my final assignment and exam must be interesting, to say the least...

So I haven't really been speaking about my work stuff, but I started doing transcriptions last autumn as a part-time remote job. That flexibility is exactly what I need, since I can organise my working hours each week and won't be wasting time in commuting, which is a huge plus in a city like Madrid. The good thing is that I could travel to Finland thanks to my job's flexible character, but the downside is that the working hours followed me, of course. Luckily I only do 10 hours a week so it doesn'teven affect my studies.

No juu, ehdin mä opiskelujen ja töiden lisäksi käymään Kuopio-Lapinlahti-Iisalmi akselilla, viettää aikaa perheen kanssa, nähdä kavereita (joskin vain muutamaa), nauttimaan suomiherkuista, käymään Gina Tricotin alennusmyynneissä, juhlimaan uuttavuotta Puikkarissa, ihmettelemään ainaista harmautta, pelaamaan Guitar Herota, aloittamaan Skam kaverin suosituksesta ja uusimaan passin. Varsin tehokkaat pari viikkoa, sanotaanko näin!

So apart from studying and working I did have time to visit Kuopio, Lapinlahti and Iisalmi, spend time with my family, meet some friends (although only a few), enjoy Finnish delicacies, check out Gina Tricot's sales, celebrate New Year's Ever at Puikkari, marvel at the constant greyness, play Guitar Hero, start watching Skam thanks to my friend's recommendation and renew my passport. Quite efficiently used two weeks, shall I say!

Anyway! This solo traveller strikes again after the exams - I just have to take advantage of such a long gap between the terms, right? A student cannot feel guilty for not studying if there's nothing to study! I'll be off to Romania for a week. Yup, not the most popular travel destination in Europe, but that's what makes it so intriguing. I already googled some of the sights to see and the basics of Romanian, which happens to belong to the same language family as Spanish, Italian and French. At least enough to know how to pronounce the names of the places correctly and say hello, ahah.

¡Don't Tell Me I Speak Good Spanish!

¡Hablas muy bien español! Kommentti, jotka ensimmäisten Espanja-kuukausien aikana tuntui piristävältä ja vilpittömältä kohteliaisuudelta on muuttunut viimeisimmäksi asiaksi, jonka haluan tuntemattomilta kuulla. Lopettakaa minun kielitaidon arvioiminen.

!Hablas muy bien español! A comment which felt pretty cheering and sincere during my first months in Spain has become the last thing I want to hear. Stop evaluating my language skills.

Mistä kukaan tietää, puhunko espanjaa vai englantia paremmin? Tai mistä kukaan tietää, vaikka olisinkin puoliksi tai kokonaan espanjalainen ulkonäköstä huolimatta? Tuskinpa olisin Espanjan ensimmäinen blondi. En tiedä... Ajattelevatko espanjaa puhuvat, että heidän kieltä on vaikea oppia? Vai että todellinen monikielisyys on lähestulkoon mahdotonta, koska he itse hädin tuskin puhuvat englantia?

Maybe I speak Spanish better than English? Or maybe I could be half-Spanish or only Spanish despite my appearances? I doubt I'd be the first blonde Spaniard. I don't know... Do Spanish people think that their language is hard to learn? Or that multilingualism is virtually impossible, because they themselves don't speak much English?

Sun kielioppi on ihan virheetöntä!" We can speak in English if you want to." Mutta kun en halua.

Now I have to draw a line between two types of comments: the ones who point out after chatting for a while - and justifiably, I guess - that "Wow, I love hearing someone speak Spanish that well, even though you've only studied it for five years. I've studied English for many years and I still can't speak." or after a little WhatsApp chat: "I didn't even notice you weren't Spanish. You could've easily been from Castilla. Your grammar is impeccable!" Then we have them guys who consciously or less consciously reason that I don't speak Spanish and start talking to me in English. The best part is that after the basic "hola, qué tal, muy bien" they gape at me and marvel at what I've said. As if it were something extraordinary or impossible to achieve. I only said something we learnt in our first Spanish class! Or even better: I wanted to buy a pair of shoes at a fair and I asked the salesperson without a problem if they had smaller sizes and his first reaction was "We can speak in English if you want to." Well I don't want to.

I may be overreacting but these compliments aren't the consequence of me having studied hard, but just a constant reminder that I'll always be judged before I even get the chance to open my mouth. I'll always be the outsider who'll be treated differently. These situations remind me that I don't belong to this country where I feel like home. And if that doesn't make you sad then I don't know what does.

Hahah.

And to cheer things up a bit, I can tell you guys I experienced the exact opposite in Sweden. Guys just looks at me and think that they'll be speaking to a Swedish girl who speaks perfect Swedish, when in reality my mouth starts generating some gibberish in Finland Swedish and Stockholm's Swedish at an extremely slow pace. Haha.

A Day Trip to the Fascinating UNESCO City of Cuenca

Hei jou!

Heya people! How's everyone? Spain has had a few long weekends lately (which, by the way, is puente in Spanish - a bridge!) and because of that I decided to go on a little excursion to Cuenca, of which I had heard only positive things. Its historical centre is a UNESCO world heritage site and frankly, I'm not surprised. The whole of Cuenca's centre was like a gigantic castles without a roof, whose archlike corridors lead to graceful scenery.

No, annapa siinä joku järkevä vastaus lapsoselle...

So my first thing was to find my way to the hanging houses, Casas Colgadas, which can be easily reached by following the uphill road and then crossing the bridge. Mind you - that bridge was quite an experience, each and every step waving it about from one side to the other. Having said that, you can probably picture the people's reaction when a jogger came pounding, leaving behind an enormous clatter. A kid asked his father why he wasn't allowed to run on the bridge but that man just did. Try and think of an answer for that poor little thing!

Casas colgadas

Spot the odd one out... a great contrast between old buildings and a modern museum!

So after discovering the hanging houses, it was time to enter the historical centre, which was waiting for me ahead. That's where a gorgeous cathedral, lots of small lookouts from which you could see beyond the city and the ruins of an ancient castle.

The ruins of the castle which has been partly restored.

The hunger was real, so I went to the first restaurant I saw that was open close to Plaza Mayor. The waiter came so quickly that I didn't have the time to ponder which dish I should have, so the words "bacalao" and "plato típico" made up my mind for me. And I didn't regret for a minute! That mashed-potato-like dish, Bacalao al ajorriero, cod with mashed potatoes and garlic was to die for!

Unluckily, there were no tickets left for the afternoon tunnel tours at Tuneles de Alfonso VIII, so that's something I had to skip. Instead, I wandered around and ended up on one of those archlike corridors and I'm so happy I did; it opened a path which lead to a serene river, away from the touristy centre.

The ascending path leads to the river by the slanted wall

Itse lähdin matkaan avanzabusilla, jolla kesti aika lailla se pari tuntia Madridin Estación Sur linja-autoasemalta - sopii siis hyvin päiväreissuksi tämä Cuenca. Miltäs tämä teistä näytti? Oliko Cuenca ennestään tuttu?

I set off on my journey with avanzabus which took be about two hours from Madrid Estación Sur coach station, therefore Cuenca is the perfect destination for a day trip. So what do you think of the city? Did you already know about Cuenca?

Why Using Many Languages Is Not The Key to Happiness

Ootteko koskaan miettineet, millaista on käyttää useaa kieltä päivittäin?

Have you ever wondered what it's like to use several languages on a daily basis? Or do you face the same "problem" regularly? Well, let's just say there's an effing mess inside my head and there's no way I'm getting rid of it anywhere in the near future.

I don't know whether I should consider myself lucky that I can read a demanding text in Spanish without getting too distracted by the new words or if I should get worried about not taking the time and expanding my vocabulary. Be that as it may, I've been happy to get into the habit of jotting down new words very carefully and systematically and then translating them at the end of the week - you learn all sorts of words like regleta, a multi-socket adaptor, or atontado, absentminded. There isn't really any other efficient way to learn a new language in everyday life.

When I momentarily forget words in my native language, I feel like a total loser. I might be explaining something about my communications course and how we've looked into the components of nonverbal communication, such as gestures. And boom, I forget how to say gestures in Finnish. Gestures, gestos, gestes? Any help here? Or when I you're translating a menu and don't remember what chickpea is in Finnish, because all you can think of is garbanzo. I just feel completely baffled when the words that used to be at my disposal have left me down and aren't there any more.

Mikä edes on täydellisesti puhuttu kieli? Kaikki me ollaan erehtyväisiä ja ihan varmasti on parantamisen varaa aina.

Having experienced a wide range of emotions concerning linguistic connections, I've started to feel a certain type of proudness towards my complex and beloved language, Finnish. It definitely isn't one of those languages whose grammar you'll master after a couple of years of studying, as much as you're motivated. Also, after reading about bilingualism and discussing it in one of our intercultural lectures (which reminds me... did I mention I tried to translate 'lection' into French, bewildered and staring at my search which yielded 0 results? I wonder why??) I realised I can call myself bilingual. Bilingualism isn't about being a native speaker in two languages, nor does it mean that you should speak two languages perfectly. What even is a perfectly spoken language? I think we're all fallible even regarding our first language; there will always be room for improvement.

So these are just a couple of things I've been turning over in my mind for the past two weeks. I've also made my way up to the Tío Pío park - more commonly known as the Siete Tetas - a few times during this time. Can we just appreciate a moment how beautiful the city looks from above the hills!

Nyt mä haluaisin kuulla teidän kielisekamelskoista!
Now I'd like to hear your experiences with language jumbles!
