The 3 Castles Tour in Romania - How To See Them & What To Expect

DAY 3 IN ROMANIA Kolmas päivä Romaniassa ja kolme eri linnaa. On hankala valita lempparia, kun kaikki ovat niin erilaisia niin ulkoa kuin sisältä kuin kaikkine tarinoineen. Kurkistetaanpa nyt siis jokaisen sisään!

Third day in Romania and three different castles. It is tough to choose a favourite, when all of them have such a different style from the outside as well as from the inside, and not forgetting all the stories they hold in them. Let's check out each one of them!

THE PELES CASTLE

Ah, kuninkaallinen Pelesin linna. Tämä kohde sijaistee Sinaian kylässä, jonka idyyllisiä maisemia pääsimme ihastelemaan oppaamme auton ikkunoiden läpi. Pilvetkin tekivät meille palveluksen siirtyessään syrjään, kun tilalle tuli ihana auringonpaiste ja loistava sää. Kuinka ihana tapa aloittaa tämä retki! Ja hei, vaikka Kaunotar ja Hirviö sai inspiraationsa Ranskasta, niin voisin silti helposti kuvitella Bellen näille parvekkeille. Eikö vain?

Ah, the royal palace of Peles. This attraction is located in the little village of Sinaia, whose idyllic scenery we got to admire through our tour guide's car windows. Even the clouds did us a favour and moved away, when the sun took over the sky and the lovely weather welcomed us at the Peles Castle. What an amazing way to start this trip! And although the Beauty and the Beast got its inspiration from France, you could perfectly imagine Belle on these balconies, could you not?

THE BRAN CASTLE - DRACULA

Toinen kohde, Draculan linna, oli oikeastaan se, mikä toimi tämän kierroksen (ja, no, ehkä vähän koko matkan) inspiraationa. Harmittaa, etten ottanut mitään opastettua kierrosta linnan sisällä, sillä olisi ollut kiva kuulla tarinoita Vlad Seivästäjästä, sillä historian kirjoja tulee harvemmin luettua. Joka tapauksessa, tämä oli mielenkiintoinen paikka täynnä legendoja. Pieni vinkki vielä: näin talvella linnaan mennessä kannattaa ottaa huomioon hirvittävän liukas, muutaman sataa metriä pitkä polku, jota pitkin täytyy nousta. En tiedä miksi polkua ei oltu hiekoitettu. Sen sijaan lunta kyllä lapioitiin pois tieltä koko ajan.

The second stop, Dracula's Castle, was actually the one that served as an inspiration for this tour (and actually a bit for the whole trip, I guess) I'm a bit sad I didn't take any guided tour inside the castle, because it would have been nice to hear stories about Vlad the Impaler, since I rarely read any history books. This was an interesting place full of all sorts of legends. Just a little tip: in winter, the path you'll need to take to get up to the castle will be super slippery and it's not exactly short - about 200 metres. I don't know why they hadn't sanded the way properly, but they were trying to shovel the snow out of the way constantly.

THE RASNOV FORTRESS

Rasnovin linnoitus oli tämän kierroksen viimeinen kohde, ja vaikka lounas jäi tällä kerralla väliin, intoa riitti viimeisen paikan tutkimiseen. Tämä linnoitus onkin pelkästään ulkoilmanähtävyys noihin kahteen aikaisempaan verrattuna, joten siinä mielessä Rasnov on vähän erilainen vaihtoehto. Köysiratashissi vie hetkessä ylös, ja ilmeisesti hyvillä säillä hidas bussi/katujuna kuljettaa linnoitukselle asti myös. Jos linna ei tee vaikutusta matkaajaan, niin olen 100% varma, että viimeistään maisemat hoitavat homman kotiin. Lumipeitteiset kuuset, vuoristo pilvien peitossa, kylän talot säännöllisissä riveissä sekä vuorten lumiset huiput... Näin talvea vihaavana ihmisenä olin niin iloinen, että päätin matkata tänne juuri vuoden kylmimpään aikaan. Ei haittaa, vaikka kengät ovat märät eikä haittaa, että tulee kylmä heti, kun lopetat kävelyn. Tuolla on vaan niin kaunista.

The Rasnov Fortress was the last stop on this tour and although lunch was skipped this time, I was still oozing of energy for exploring it. This fortress is only an outdoor site so that's what makes it different from the two previous ones. The cable car takes you up in a matter of few minutes and apparently there is a bus or city train that runs weather permitting. If the fortress itself doesn't impress you that much, I promise you the amazing landscape will do. Snow-covered spruces, the mountain range peeking through the clouds, the houses of the village in regular rows and the snow-capped peaks... As someone who hates winter, I was so happy to travel here right in the middle of the coldest season of the year. Doesn't matter if my shoes are wet or if I get cold if I stop walking for a minute. It's just so beautiful there. 

KUINKA PÄÄSTÄ LINNOILLE
Hyviä uutisia - kaikkiin linnoihin pääsee suhteellisen helposti julkisilla eli paikallisjunalla. Junia menee tosin harvoin ja niihin ei välttämättä saa ostettua netistä lippuja etukäteen.

PÄIVÄKIERROS - KANNATTAVA VAIHTOEHTO?
Jos haluat tutkia jokaisen linnan perinpohjin kunnolla niin sanoisin, että varaa enemmän aikaa (vaikka puolikas päivä per linna) jokaisella ja hanki opastetut kierrokset kaikkiin kohteisiin. Toisaalta, jos aikaa ei ole hirveästi ja haluat päästä helpolle, niin yksityinen kierros on todellakin paras vaihtoehto! Vähän halvempi vaihtoehto yksityiskierroksille on toki ryhmäkierrokset, joiden oppaat kertovat vähän linnoista bussissa, mutta eivät välttämättä tule itse linnojen sisään. The Land of Dracula tekee loistavia ryhmäkierroksia noin 35 eurolla ja he vievät ryhmän kaikkiin linnoihin päivässä (eikä edes mene myöhäiseksi, sillä oma kierrokseni kesti 9-16) Olin varmaan onnekas, sillä mun ryhmäkierros oli lopulta yksityiskierros, sillä olin ainut, joka oli varannut sen kyseiselle päivälle.

Good news - all the castles can be reached fairly easily by public transport, by train to be more precise. I just want to remind you that they may not run very frequently and that you're most probably not able to buy the tickets online in advance.

DAY TOUR - IS IT WORTH IT?
If you'd like to explore the castles more in depth, I'd say do them separately and get guided tours in each one. Then again, if you're short on time and want to go the easy way, having a private tour guide is definitely the best option! You always have the alternative to book a group tour, whose guides will tell you stories about the castles in the bus but might not accompany you to the castle itself. They are a good alternative as they are a bit more reasonably priced than a private tours. The Land of Dracula offer great group tours for around €35 and they take you to all three castles in one day (and you won't even be back late - for example, my tour lasted from 9 to 16). I guess I was lucky since my group tour turned out to be a private one, as I was the only one who had booked it.

Brasov, Romania - More Than Just Dracula

DAY 2 AND 4 IN ROMANIA

Yhden yön jälkeen oli aika jättää Sibiu taakse ja lähteä kohti toista Transylvanian kaupunkia, Brasovia. Kyseisenä päivänä sattui olemaan paikallinen pyhäpäivä, ja kun nettisivuilta ei saanut ostettua bussilippuja etukäteen, pieni pelkoi alkoi hiipimään päässäni. Pakko sanoa, että ensimmäisenä yönä päässä pyöri siis vain ajatus siitä, että nyt jäätiin loukkuun Sibiuun. Tämä huoli oli kuitenkin ihan turha, sillä bussi kulki kuin kulkikin Sibiu-Brasov väliä pyhäpäivänä ja lippuja riitti yllin kyllin. Meitä matkustajia oli viisi, kun taas kuljettajia oli kaksi. Minibussi starttasi matkansa kohti Transylvanian mutkittelevia teitä.

After one night it was already time to leave Sibiu behind and head towards another Transylvanian town, Brasov. Funnily, this very day happened to be a public holiday and since I wasn't able to buy the bus tickets online in advance, a tiny fear started creeping in. I've got to admit that the only thing I thought about on my first night was that I'm getting trapped in Sibiu. This concern of mine turned out to be unnecessary, because the bus did run between Sibiu and Brasov in the end and there certainly were enough tickets for everyone. Us passengers were five, whereas the drivers were two. The minibus could start its journey towards Transylvania's meandering roads.

THE BEST HOSTEL IN BRASOV?

Heti alkuun kiitetäänpä Centrum House hostellia, jonka työntekijät ja kanssamatkaajat teki olon niin kotoisaksi Brasovissa! Väsymyksestä huolimatta tuli vietettyä upeita hetkiä hostellin luolabaarissa jutellen muiden yksinmatkaajien kanssa eri puolilta maailmaa. Meitä ei ollut kuin joku 15 henkeä, mutta sehän teki tunnelmasta vain tiiviimmän. Aamupaloilla ja iltaisin löytyi aina joku, jolle jutella. Mä en muuten tiedä, miksi jotkut hostellit ovat täynnä näin ihania ihmisiä ja miksi jotkut jää vähän sellaisiksi keskinkertaisiksi - vaikkei millään tavalla negatiivisiksi - kokemuksiksi. Muita ihania hostelleja oli nimittäin Lissabonissa (Alfama Patio Hostel) sekä Dublinissa (Jacobs Inn Hostel).

So first of all, let's thank Centrum House Hostel and its lovely staff and travellers for making me feel so welcome in Brasov! Despite the lack of sleep, we spent amazing moments together in the hostel's cave bar chatting with other solo travellers around the world.We must have been around 15 people only but hey, that's what made the atmosphere close-knit. There was always someone to talk to at breakfast or dinner time. By the way, I don't know why some hostels succeed to be such amazing experiences and others - while not being bad experiences by any means - fail to do so. Other hostels that are worth mentioning would be Alfama Patio Hostel in Lisbon and Jacobs Inn Hostel in Dublin.

SIGHTSEEING IN THE TOWN

Ensimmäinen kokonainen päivä Brasovissa meni linnatourilla, joten toka päivä pyhitettiin pelkästään Brasovin nähtävyyksille (joita ei ihan hirveästi olekaan). Kuten Sibiustakin, täältä löytyi paljon keskiaikaisia vaikutteita kuten torneja, kirkko ja portti sekä ihania vanhoja rakennuksia. Yksi Euroopan kapeimmista kujista, Strada Sforii, löytyy myös Brasovista kuten myös allaoleva ystävällinen koira. Se juoksi minua päin pitkän matkaa, toi minulle kiven ja alkoi haukkumaan, kun en lähtenyt leikkiin mukaan. Ehkä se aisti, että olen koiraihmisiä. Joka tapauksessa oikein suloinen yksilö!

The first whole day in Brasov was spent on a castle tour, so it was only the second day that I dedicated to seeing Brasov's touristy things (which aren't that many, to be honest) Just like in Sibiu, you can find lots medieaval influences like towers, the church, a gate and wonderful fairy-tale-like buildings. Also, not forgetting that one of Europe's narrowest streets, Strada Sforii, is here in Brasov as well as one of the world's most friendliest dogs I've ever met! This little guy saw me from the distance, came up to me and brought me a stone. He started barking as I didn't start playing with him. This guy probably sensed I was a dog person, hahah!

Noh, valkoiselle tornille oli vähän liian extremeä minun makuuni, joten matka jäi puolitiehen. Ei täällä tunneta talvikunnossapitoa, hahaa. Mustalle tornille pystyin juuri ja juuri kiipeämään. Voin muuten sanoa, että niitä turisteja (saati muita ihmisiä) ei kyllä tullut vastaan.

So the journey to the white tower turned out a bit too extreme for me which was why I surrendered half way. Winter maintenance is not a known concept here, aha. However,I make it to the Black Tower although I struggled. Again, there were no tourists (or other people, for that matter) around.

PREPARE YOUR TASTEBUDS

Elin varmaan puolet mun ajasta Brasovissa erilaisilla leipomon herkuilla, mutta yksi ravintolasuositus multa löytyy teille: La Ceaun. Heiltä löytyy ihania romanialaisia keittoja ja muita paikallisia herkkuja halpaan hintaan ja palvelu oli todella hyvää! Ja joo, pakkohan mun on niitä leipomon herkkujakin teille suositella: pretzeleitä, torvia, piirakoita... ties mitä juttuja, joiden nimiä en edes tiedä. Löysin Budapestissä syömää Kürtőskalácsia (huhhuh mikä sanahirviö) ja tulin niin iloiseksi, sillä se oli yksi mun lemppariherkku sillä matkalla. Mä en vieläkään ole varma, oliko tuossa kanelia, pähkinää vai mitä tuon rullan päällä, mutta se on niin hyvää!

I probably spent half of my time in Brasov indulging on different sorts of treats from the bakery but I do have one restaurant recommendation for you: La Ceaun. They have such nice soups as well as other local delicacies and they're service was perfect! Of course I'll recommend you guys to try all the stuff at the bakery: pretzels, horns, pies... so many things whose names I don't even know. I also found Kürtőskalács (gosh what a name!) which I ate in Budapest and that made me so happy! I'm still not sure about what they sprinkle on the top, whether it's cinnamon, nuts or something else but it is just amazing!

Kurtoskalacs - a pastry you might have seen in Hungary

Tiedän, että Brasoviin tehdään päiväretkiä Bucarestistä, mutta olen niin iloinen, että jäin pariksi yöksi tutkimaan tätä paikkaa. Brasov kun on kaupunki vuorten välissä, niin siellä oli taianomainen tunnelma ja upeita maisemia. Menisin kyllä heti takaisin!

I know people do day trips to Brasov from Bucharest but I was so happy I decided to stay here for a couple of nights to explore is better. Brasov being a town between two mountains, it gave a magical feeling to it and the views were spectacular, of course. Would go back in a heartbeat!

First Impression of Romania: the Mediaeval Town of Sibiu

Romanian reissu alkoi pienellä Sibiun kaupungilla, jonne oli suoria lentoja Madridista. Ja vau, mikä kaupunki toisessa päässä odottikaan!

This Romania trip began with the town of Sibiu to which there were direct flights from Madrid. And WOW what a town I was about to visit!

Matka lentokentältä keskustaan oli jo itsessään pieni seikkailu. Olisi tietysti ollut järkevää ottaa ensimmäinen taksi heti lentokentän oven suusta, mutta halusin mennä bussilla, kun tiesin oikean linjankin jo - sehän riittää, eikö niin? Huono juttu, etten tiennyt missä pitäisi jäädä pois, kun mitään karttoja ynnä muuta ei bussissa ollut. Onneksi sain apua eräältä mukavalta romanialaiselta bussissa, joka googletti kaiken tarvittavan ja törmäsin jotenkin kummallisesti hostelliini pienen pyörimisen jälkeen keskustassa. Olin lähellä itkeä onnesta, kun näin hostellin! Lentokentältä pääsee siis bussilla numero 11 keskustaan, lippu maksoi 2leu (=0,43€) ja liput ostetaan pienestä keltaisesta laatikosta bussipysäkillä. Kannattaa katsoa, että on tarpeeksi pientä käteistä, sillä kone ottaa vastaan vain 1leu ja 5leu seteleitä.

Getting from the airport to the city centre was a little adventure itself. Of course it would have been easy to take the first taxi you see when you step out of the airport, but I opted for public transport since I knew the bus number already - that's enough, right? Too bad I had to idea where to get off and where my hostel was, but luckily a nice Romanian guy helped me google everything I needed to know. I then somehow magically stumbled across my hostel while of going around in circles and was close to crying tears of joy! All's well that ends well. Bus number 11 takes you from the airport to the city centre for 2leu (=€0,43) ja the tickets must be bought in a small yellow box at the bus stop. Make sure you have small enough cash because the machine only accepts 1leu and 5leu notes.

B13 hostel oli todella tyhjä. Mulla oli itseasiassa kuuden sängyn dormi itselleni, mikä kävi paremmin kuin hyvin, kun ekan matkustuspäivän jälkeen oli vähän väsynyt ja hämmentynyt uuden kielen, valuutan ja ihmisten takia. Täällä olikin aika kummallista olla, sillä turisteja ei kyllä palko näkynyt. Eipähän ollut missään ryysistä tai jonoa! Sibiussa lähdettiin näkemään muun muassa luterilainen kirkko, ortodoksinen kirkko, kellotorni, pääostoskatu Nicolae Balcescu ja valehtelijan silta, jotka olivat kaikki ihan ydinkeskustassa. Olen varmaan sivistymätön yksilö, kun taidemuseot ei vain jaksa kiinnostaa, vaikka kuinka upeita ovatkin...

B13 hostel was pretty empty. In fact, I had a 6-bed dorm to myself which was more than fine by me, since I was a bit tired after travelling and confused of the new language, currency and people. It was a strange feeling to be one of the few tourists in the town. At least there were no queues or overcrowding! The landmarks that attracted me the most were the Lutheran church, Orthodox church, Council tower, main shopping street Nicolae Balcescu and the Liar's Bridge, which were all in the city centre. I'm probably an uncultured individual but I just can't be bothered with all the art museums however gorgeous they are...

Kellotorniin ja luterilaisen kirkon torniin kiipeäminen oli ihan oman luokkansa kokemus. Natisevat ja paikoittain heiluvat portaat, ei ketään muita paikalla sekä mystinen musiikki teki kokemuksesta melkein pelottavan. Kaiken huippu oli kyllä luterilaisen kirkon pulut, jotka odottivat minua ikkunoiden ulkopuolella, kun vihdoin pääsin huipulle. Vähän ajan päästä käännän pään ja tämä pulu onkin sisällä, noin parin neliön kokoisessa tilassa mun kanssa! Ääk! Pienten sähläysten jälkeen eräs korealainen matkaaja ilmestyi paikalle ja saadettiin se häädettyä takaisin ulkoilmaan. Ei mikään ihme, että ikkunoissa lukee tuo teksti. On mielenkiintoista, että näin itäisestä Euroopasta löytyy luterilainen kirkko. Sibiussa on aika iso saksalainen vähemmistö kuten myös saksankielisiä kouluja ja jopa saksankielinen nimi (Herrmannstadt), joten sinänsä tämä käy ihan järkeen.

Getting up to the council tower and Lutheran church tower was quite an experience. Their creaky, shaky stairs, no one around and the mystical music made it nearly scary. The real cherry on the top were the pigeons that were waiting for me at the Lutheran church's tower. After admiring the view for a while, I turned my head and realised one was inside! Eek! After fumbling there for a while, a Corean traveller appared and came to save me, guiding the pigeon back to the open air. No wonder the windows have the text they have! It was interesting to find a Lutheran church in Eastern Europe. Then again, Sibiu has a long German tradition, as well as German schools and even a German name (Herrmannstadt) so it only makes sense.

Tykkään ottaa ihan kunnolla kuvia matkustaessa yksin, joten oli hirveää huomata ekana päivänä, että selfiestick jäi kotiin. Tässä oli kyse oli suhteellisen pienestä kaupungista (n. 150 000 asukasta) niin en uskonut löytäväni uutta keppiä sieltä... kunnes törmäsin yhteen krääsäkauppaan, joita Madridistakin löytyy joka kulmalta. Ja sieltähän se kuvauskeppi löytyi! Jo oli Rosa onnessaan, kun sai taas ikuistettua itseään kuviin. Ai niin, löydöistä puheenollen päädyin pieneen matelijanäyttelyyn ennen Sibiusta lähtöä, kun en keksinyt enää mitään tekemistä. Löytyi käärmeitä, tarantelloja, gekkoja, kilpikonnia ja jopa alligaattori. Niihin tunnelmiin oli hyvä päättää tämä yhden yön kohde ja siirtyä kohti Brasovia.

I like to take plenty of pictures while travelling, so I was shocked to realise I left my selfie stick home. We're talking about a fairly small town (150 000 inhabitants) which is why I didn't think I'd find a new stick there... until I bumped into this bric-a-brac shop, which we have in Madrid, too. And that's where I found my new photography stick! Rosa was all over the moon because she could start to capture herself on film again. Talking about finds, I also stumbled across this reptile exposition with snakes, geckos, turtles and even an alligator, since I didn't know what to do before leaving Sibiu. It was the perfect way to end my stay in this one-night destination and head towards Brasov.

Ensi kerralla katsotaan sitten Brasovin maisemia ja eri linnoja, joita tuli nähtyä kolme kappaletta siellä. Hyvää torstaita kaikille!
