What they don't tell you about living abroad

The past few days I've been thinking about how many people create an unrealistically glamorous image of living abroad and dismiss the harrowing feelings that one may experience. Of course, you shouldn't grumble as it was your own choice to leave and if you're not happy, it's just better to stay quiet and return to your country. Still, each and every one of my summer job periods and school terms end in tears and questions. What will life be like next year and will everything go all right?

I've got to admit that one of the most painful experiences is letting go of the new people you've befriended. You meet so many amazing, inspiring and like-minded people, who can become very close to you even in a short amount of time. Clearly, you will always meet the most important ones in the future, especially if these people live in Europe, but it's always a shock when your close-knit network falls apart. And then you go through it again next spring.

It hurts double the amount when you happen to fall in love with someone who's leaving soon. Oh boy, does that hurt.

Also, the annual pack up-store-move in routine will become familiar, if you as a student refuse to pay for the summer months you're not spending in the flat. The despair starts kicking in when you realise that you have, once again, successfully hoarded too many things throughout the year (were the couple of pairs of shoes really necessary? Or did I really need new cushions??) and that storage room costs an arm and a leg or they have safety and/or humidity problems.

If storage room costs you an arm and a leg, then renting a room costs you all your limbs. The housing bubble is just about to burst in Madrid and changing a flat is definitely not helping the situation. One real estate page claims that the average room rent in Madrid is €603. I remember when I was browsing the very same page in 2016 and snorted at their average price estimate which was €450. Where are the famous student flats and their waiting lists? Ah yeah, we don't have any over here.

Tänä vuonna päätynyt lukuvuosi merkkaa kuitenkin jotain erikoista, sillä me lähdetään Kaakkois-Aasiaan mun hyvän kaverin kanssa.

This year, the end of spring term marks a special point, as we will be embarking on a trip to South-East Asia with my good friend. The trip has already exhausted me regarding the travel insurance, health and vaccines, packing and money that a few weeks ago I would have just preferred to return home to Finland doing nothing, but it is such a blessing to be able to explore with a friend, as it's not always easy to make time and money.
