MADEIRA - A FOODIE'S PARADISE

Hei hei hei hei! Miten mä en ole julkaissut tätä kenties tärkeintä Madeira-postausta, eli ruokapostausta?! No, onneksi Madeira ei häviä minnekään ja aina voi kaiken tehdä "mañana", joten tässäpä mennään!

What's this?! How have I not posted this - probably the most important post of Madeira - the food post? Well, luckily Madeira's still in its place and these tips might come in handy later, so let's start!

1. Restaurante do Forte
Alotetaan ehkä upeimmalla näistä, eli linnaravintolalla.
We'll start with the possibly most gorgeous one, the Fort restaurant.

Kaviaaria ja katkarapua / Caviar and prawns

Turskaa passionhedelmällä ja banaanilla / Cod with passion fruit and banana

Mille-feuille

Otettiin kolmen lajin menu, johon sisältyi viinit ja kaikenlaisia välimakupalojakin. Tää oli meidän viimeinen illallinen, joten järkättiin jännä vanha auto hakemaan meidät hotellilta (ravintolan järjestämä palvelu). Samaan syssyyn ajelun jälkeen meidät lähetettiin katselemaan maisemia yksityisterassilta, mikä tuntui aika huikealta. Linna oli niin kaunis - harmi, ettei se enää toimi museona. Joka tapauksessa ruoka oli huikeaa ja palvelukin pelasi. Suuri peukku ylös ja suositukset kaikille! Iltahämärässä sitä toivoi, että olisi ottanut kameran mukaan noita ruokakuvia varten...

We opted for the whole three-course menu, which included different wines and small delicacies in between, too. This was our last dinner together, so we wanted to organise something special: an old car ride! They came to pick us up from our hotel to the restaurant (one of the restaurant's services). And as we got there, another surprise was waiting for us... they sent us to a private viewing point in the castle! Such a shame the castle isn't used as a museum anymore; it's stunning. Anyway, the service was on point and the food was absolutely gorgeous. Thumbs up and a recommendation for all of you! In the nightfall, I wish I'd taken my camera for the food snaps...

2. Scat Music Club & Restaurant
Tämä ravintola oli ihan meidän hotellin lähellä, joten pitihän sitä lähteä testaamaan.
This restaurant was right by our hotel so of course we had to test it.

Täälläkin otettiin koko ateriat ja kuten kuvista näkyy, en voinut vastustaa Madeiran passionhedelmäruokia. Tuo limesorbetti oli hauskasti jään sisällä tarjoiltuna! Lemppariksi nousi tuo alkupala, jossa oli tosi erilaisia makuyhdistelmiä leipien päällä. Livemusiikki loi kivaa tunnelmaa ravintolassa.

We went for the whole menu here as well and, as you can probably see, I just couldn't resist the Madeira's passion fruit foods. That lime sorbet was cleverly served inside an ice! If I had to pick a favourite, it would definitely be the starter which combined different flavours on four small pieces of baguette. Yum. The live music was a nice little plus. 

3. Casino
Tänne lähdettiin katsomaan musikaaliesitystä, ei pelaamaan uhkapelejä, heh.
We went here to enjoy a dinner musical, not to gamble. Haha.

Tosin pakko myöntää, että ilmainen viiden euron kuponki tuli käytettyä jossain erittäin strategisessa piraattipelissä, josta en ymmärtänyt mitään. Ehkä vaan parempi, ettei noita pelejä osaa edes pelata... Ruokana oli tosiaan vuohenjuusto-kevätkääryle (joka oli niiin hyvää, vaikka en ole koskaan ennen tykännyt vuohenjuustosta!), kalaa vihannes-perunamuusilla sekä joku vaniljajuttu, jota en nyt tähän hätään muista. Pääruokien loputtua lavalle saapui tanssijoita ja soittajia, jotka esittivät erilaisia iloisia biisejä. Taitavia olivatkin, ei siinä mitään, mutta itse odotin jotain teatterimaisempaa esitystä lavastuksineen ja juonineen.

I have to come clean and tell you guys that I did use the five-euro voucher we were given in a strategic pirate game, which I didn't understand at all. Probably better that way... won't be gambling in the future lol. For dinner, we had a goat cheese-spring roll (which was SO good even though I've never liked goat cheese!), fish with mashed potatoes and vegetables and some sort of vanilla thing whose name I can't remember right off the top of my head. After we'd eaten the main courses, some singers and dancers came up on the stage and started to perform cheerful songs. They sure were talented, but I was looking forward to seeing some theatre-like performance with props and a plot.

Ehkä tästä postauksesta kävikin ilmi, mutta toi linnaravintola oli ihan selkeesti mun lemppari. Suunnatkaa siis sinne, jos ootte Funchalissa Madeiralla! Ihana paikka!

Not a surprise that my absolute favourite was the fort restaurant. So head there, if you're visiting Funchal, Madeira! Such a lovely place! 

MADEIRA: Up to the Mountains

Kuinka kivalta maailma näyttää yläilmoista! Vaikka vuoristoteitten kurvit sai mut toivomaan, että olisin jättänyt väliin koko reissun, oli kaikki sen arvoista. Meillä oli reipas paikallinen taksikuski, joka vei meidät kahteen eri paikkaan: Pico do Arieirolle - vuoren huipulle - sekä muutama sataa metriä alemmaksi Nunnienlaaksoon. Jälkimmäinen toimi ennen nunnien pakopaikkana ja legendan mukaan kylässä asuisikin vielä tänä päivänä nainen, joka ei ole koskaan nähnyt merta vaikka asuu saarella... Mene ja tiedä näistä.

Mä tein viime torstaina tän vuoden vikan kokeen ja oon nyt sitten vihdoin lomalla! Se meinaa myös sitä, että ehdin kirjottelemaan paljon paremmin bloginkin puolelle näinä kuukausina. Hyvää kesälomaa niille, keillä se alkoi! :)

The world just looks gorgeous from high above! Although the meandering roads made me wish I had stayed at the hotel, everything was worth it. We were lucky to have a lovely local taxi driver who took us to two places: Pico do Arieiro (the peak of the mountains) and a few hundred metres downwards to the Nuns' Valley. The latter one used to be a refuge for the nuns, and the legend tells that there's still one woman in the village who has never seen the sea, despite living on an island... Go figure.

I finished my last exam on last Thursday, so I'm finally on holiday! That means that I'll also have more time to write stuff on my blog during these months, yay. Hope you who are on holiday enjoy your time off!

MADEIRA: Flower Power & Tight Curves Ahead

Ekana päivänä olin niin innoisani Madeiralle tulosta, että altaalla löhöily ei todellakaan kuulunut suunnitelmiin! Otettiin siis köysiratashissi Montea kohti, josta oli aivan huikeat näkymät merelle. Mietittiin kasvitieteellisen puutarhan ja trooppisen puutarhan välillä kumpaanko mentäs, mutta päädyttiin lopulta jälkimmäiseen, koska sinne ei tarvinnut ottaa toista hissiä. Eikä ainakaan ollut huono valinta tuo Monte Palace Tropical Garden, sillä joka nurkka oli täynnä ties minkälaisia kukkia, erilaisia teemoja ja eläimiäkin!

I was so excited on my first day at Madeira that starting the holiday by lying by the pool was out of the question, so we took a cable car up towards Monte. Once we arrived, stunning views of the sea opened up to us and we found ourselves seeing beauty everywhere! There was just one 'but': we were stuck between two garden options (Monte Palace Tropical Garden or the Botanical Gardens). Eventually, we made up our mind and decided to head to the first option, since it didn't require another cable car trip. And it certainly didn't let us down; the whole park was blooming with different colours and kept surprising us with different themes!  

Lippu puutarhaan maksoi sellaiset 12,5€, mikä sinänsä on aika paljon puistosisäänpääsymaksusta, mutta toi paikka oli jättimäinen! Hyvillä mielin lähdettiin puistosta etsimään perinteistä koriajelupaikkaa, että päästäis vuorelta alas keskustaan päin. Kyllä, luitte oikein: tultiin koreilla alas. Se oli (ja on varmaan vieläkin, vaikka se on vain turistikäytössä) kätevin tapa tulla alas mutkittelevia teitä, Ja ainakin se oli superhauskaa, vaikka välillä tuntui, että koko pulkka menee nurin!

The entrance cost 12,5 euros which is, let's face it, quite a lot for a simple garden. But this place was well-kept and massive!! We left the park content and went on to look for the traditional basket ride, so that we could get down this mountain in a matter or minutes. Yes, you read that right: we came down by baskets. It was (and probably continues to be, albeit only among tourists) the quickest way to come down the meandering roads. And at least it was so much fun, although I felt like the basket would topple and leave us rolling down the hill! 

Siinäpä nyt tokan päivän tunnelmia! Muina päivinä ei tullutkaan ihan niin paljon edestakaisin kävelyä harrastettua, mutta kerrottavaa riittää, joten pian lisää sitten muun muassa ruokapaikoista, vuoristosta ja julkisesta liikenteestä! Toivottavasti kaikilla menee ihan jees siellä, hasta pronto <3

That's what we did on our second day! The other ones weren't as busy, to be honest... but they did include gorgeous food, great moments at the pool and some sightseeing. I'll tell about that later then guys! Hope you're all alright, hasta pronto <3
