The Fisherman's bastion

_MG_8551_SAM9117 Moikka!

Heya! I just came here to drop down a few photos of the Fisherman's Bastion before I do longer post of Budapest again. We're talking about a Bastion that was built in the beginning of the 20th century for decorative and not really for military purposes. And it is a wonder, how WW2 didn't affect the Bastion negatively and they got it restored exellently.

There were some cute little streets, houses and a miniature Mattias Church and Fisherman's Bastion nearby! You can see my previous posts about the Buda Castle District and Mattias Church over here, if you missed them. Happy First of May everyone! This time we'll be celebrating it in Finland with a hint of snow! :-D

The glorious Mattias Church

2_SAM9113_MG_8657PicMonkey Collageff_MG_86904_MG_8675 Hei!

Hey! This time I'll dedicate the whole post for the Mattias Church which is located in the Buda Castle district aka Várhegy. In hindsight, it was fun to see the church from inside, since I probably wouldn't have felt like buying a ticket and go roaming without my friend. The ticket seller realized that we were from Finland and thanked us for buying tickets in Finnish. So cute but so confusing at the same time.

New challenges await abroad

Do you know the feeling, when you're rushing towards something new and you hardly know what's going to happen? Yep, that's how I've been feeling the past few days. All young people know that applying for summer jobs has reached its climax and any moment now we get to know about job interviews or prospective jobs. This time hard work payed off - just not really like I had expected.

Stressed about matriculation examination, finding a job and thinking about different universities, I applied for several jobs without really thinking whether the open position was suitable for me. I filled in half the information for my Nordjobb profile carelessly and had already forgotten about it for a while. Then, all of a sudden, they sent me a message asking me whether I was interested in care work in Stockholm. After a presentation letter, a couple of e-mails and lots n lots of translations from Swedish to Finnish, the position was confirmed and I'll be spending June, July and August in Stockholm. Oh gosh!

Stockholm isn't very far away nor is it exotic, but Sweden is still another country where they speak a totally different language. Living in a studio/shared apartment/whatevertheyfindme will be different from living at my parents. Getting around in a big city (Stockholm is big compared to Kuopio!) and all the spare time activities are a whole new ballgame over there. I'm also a bit worried about using a new language, since I've had a one-year break from studying Swedish and now I actually have to get along with at work 7.5 hours a day. And I don't even know exactly what I'll be doing at work!

Näistä on ihan hyvä aloittaa.

But I've got trust and confidence and know that these things will figure themselves out. I'm sure I'll get to know other "nordjobbers" since we have a nice little Facebook group as well. I just really hope that work and free time will be in perfect balance, because I said I could also do night shifts and weekends. Oh well. The next month and a half I'll just have to brush up my Swedish by attending my two last courses of Swedish in high school as conscientiously as I can and practice Swedish in other ways - that means I have a good reason to put on Veronica Maggio and watch a couple of episodes of the Moomins! I think this is a good start.

There's just one thing, which I don't like: filling out taxing information in Swedish. It was quite close to hell, you know. At least before the time I figured out, that there's actually instructions to help us fill in the forms on Facebook... Way to go, Rosa! And way to go everyone who managed to read the whole of this super long post of thoughts buzzing in my head. If you know any good books, series or movies in Swedish , let me know! Now I'm just gonna wish you all a very happy weekend ♥

Buda Castle District

Moikka moi! Johan näillä Budapest-postauksilla on kestänyt...

Heya! It's taken such a long time with these Budapest posts... But anything else cannot be blamed but my lazyness. I'll tell more about our first day later, so let's skip straight ahead to Buda Hill or Várhegy. On our second day, we went to the Buda side which kept us amazed; we could've probably spent the whole day long wandering over there! You could get on top of the hill by bus of by foot but we chose the traditional funicular, whose journey took only a few minutes. They squeezed a great amount of people into that small cabin - absolutely no chance to sit and photograph at the same time.

7 _SAM9076 Näköalat tietysti olivat upeat ylhäältä käsin! The view was, of course, fantastic from above!

PicMonkey Collage75

PicMonkey Collage_MG_8474 ...ja Kuninkaanlinnakin tuli tutuksi tuolla kierrellessä. Kuvan ottaminen meistä molemmista ei ollutkaan ihan helpoin juttu, kun saatiin viritellä kameraa ja itselaukaisinta ties mitenkä:-D Muutamat ihmiset kattelivat vähän huvittuneina vierestä, mutta tuo nyt onkin kunnon turistialue, jossa kaikki kuvailee muutenkin. He ymmärsivät eivätkä tulleet pilaamaan meidän kuvaa talsimalla kameran edestä.

...and we also got familiar with he Buda castle going round. Taking a photo of us two wasn't such an easy case, since we had to fiddle with the settings and self-timer and everything:-D Some people were looking at us a bit amused, but this place was, nonetheless, a tourist area where everyone was photographing anyway. They understood and didn't ruin our pics by walking carelessly in front of the camera.

_MG_8361PicMonkey Collage8
Kateltiin siinä myös Presidentin toimistoa eli Sándorin palatsia. Miehet hoitivat jämäkästi vartiointiansa palatsin edessä. Tällaisissa tilanteissa tekisi mieli hyppiä niiden silmille ja katsoa milloin he liikahtavat, heh.

We also saw the Sándor Palace, which is where the President is. The men carried out their duties guarding strictly in front of the palace. In these kinds of situations, I feel like running riot and see when they start moving, haha. I didn't do that, though. We started to feel a little hungry - or more like eating something good - so we headed to a lovely patisserie! I think it was the first café we passed after going about for a while, but it was just good for us.

Indeed, a glass of white wine and a piece of cake in this patisserie cost about four euros. It would be dangerous if it were that cheap in Finland regarding such delicacies! After a small pause we continued to the Fisherman Bastion and Matthias Church, but I'm gonna tell about them next time, so this post won't be too long. Oh, and a small tribute to my travelling buddy who has taken half of these photos!

9 Snapshots from New York

Heippa!

Hey everyone! I wanted to share these snaps before starting my Budapest posts. I could still write about New York quite a lot, but let's just leave it for a while. You can, however, already read about Budapest vibes and travel tips in tomorrow's (15.4.) Savon Sanomat! Yaay:-) It was so nice to write an article on traveling, even though writing other articles has been also very rewarding.

1  Ei pysäköintiä maanantaisin. Jäi vähän epäselväksi, miksi näillä oli erikseen tällaisia lappuja:-D
No parking on mondays. I didn't really get why they had these notes :-D oh well

2  Paras.aamupala.ikinä♥ Kulhosta löytyy siis maustamatonta jogurttia, lämmitettyä granolaa, kuivattuja karpaloita, suklaatäytteisiä muroja ja tuoreita hedelmiä. Tällä jaksoi hyvin iltapäivään asti! Ikävä muuten noita valmiiksi pilkottuja hedelmiä ja marjoja, joita myytiin kätevissä muotimukeissa.

The.best.breakfast.ever♥ The bowl holds natural yoghurt, microwaved granola, dried cranberries, chocolate filled cereals and fresh fruits. This kept me full until afternoon! By the way, I really miss those ready-chopped fruits and berries which were sold in handy plastic cups.

3  Tämä taitaa mennä siihen "only in America" kastiin. Vaikka olisivat nuo katulaturit tosi käteviä täällä Suomessakin, en valittaisi! Bongattu Manhattanin eteläosasta.

I'm pretty sure this is one of the things that fall into the category "only in America." However, these street chargers would come in very handy here in Finland as well. Wouldn't mind if we had them too! Spotted in southern Manhattan.

4  NBC-studion kaupassa kiertelemässä. Tuossa vieressä kuvataan perinteisiä amerikkalaisia talk showita, joita olisi sinänsä ollut mielenkiintoista olla katsomassa!

Wandering in the NBC studio store. Right next to the shop they film American talk shows, which would have been interesting to see!

_SAM8299

You've just got to buy B&J at least once when you've come all the way to America! This flavour was bit of a disappointment, though :-( It was too sweet even for me, the ultimate chocolate lover...

A photo with my bro because we felt so happy♥ This photo makes me crack because of our angry faces. Seriously, we did have fun in Staten Island even though it doesn't look like it!

Dinner in our hotel room:-) We had our own kitchen and actually ended up cooking on a couple of evenings. Opposite the hotel there was a huge food shop called Fairway market, which had an excellent variety of meat, cheese, vegetables, pastries and especially organic products. We bought some super delicious Australian cheddar cheese and blue cheese♥ On the plate there's salmon, green peas, two types of rice, salad and some baguette.

People on Broadway. It was funny how much people spoke Spanish and how the street scene looked so multicultural.

We walked past Lincoln Center a few times and I couldn't help noticing the advert for the Nutcracker ballet show. It would have been awesome to see the show before Christmas!

9/11 memorial & museum

_SAM8148 Tämä paikka on varmasti kaikile tuttu ei-niin-mukavan tapahtuman johdosta. Valitettavasti.

This place must be familiar to everyone thanks to a not-so-nice incident. Unfortunately. Right from the beginning, it was obvious that since we were going all the way to New York, I would definitely want to visit the WTC memorial and museum - 9/11 is, after all, one of the most memorable incidents that has happened during the lifetime of a youngster like me.

_SAM8150
Entisten tornien kohdille oli rakennettu suihkulähteet, joiden reunilla luki kaikki uhrien nimet. Uskon, että tuo olisi illalla näyttänyt todella upealta valoineen.

Water fountains holding the names of the victims were built where the old WTC towers used to be. I think the fountain would have looked magnificent by night with its lights.

PicMonkey Collage

Here's a little perspective on how tall the buildings are. The photo on the right-hand side isn't the World Trade Center itself but a nearby skyscraper. Crazy proportions in New York! We got inside the museum, which has been built near one of the former towers, in less than an hour. Understandably, in most of the museum you couldn't take photos so I don't have a whole lot of pics. But on the left, you can see the ravaged staircase of one of the former towers.

_SAM8164

PicMonkey Collagea

After seeing photos, old foundations and stairs, we got into the section where everything was told right from the beginning to the end. The most horrible thing was to hear people's last words to their loved ones on a tape. "I'm alright. Remember that I'll always love you. No need to worry." For some reason, I always tended to think how agonizing it must have been in the towers when the planes crashed, but on second thoughts, being in a hijacked plane doesn't sound very tempting either.

Piipahtakaa täällä siis, jos matkaatte New Yorkiin!

Everyday objects brought a much more humane approach towards the incident. They had a broken high heel, dirty clothes and the equipment of the firefighters. on display in the museum. Then again, in the end - when I was already a bit too tired to fully concentrate - they thoroughly told about al Qaeda and its ideology. You could also find tapes and all sorts of original notes and objects. At the same time it's so chilling but interesting. Overall, the museum was very comprehensive and worth a visit. So pop inside if you're on your way to New York!
