Wine cellars & tasting + last day in Porto

I feel like one cannot leave Porto without tasting Port wine, just like one can't leave Paris without seeing the Eiffel tower or London without saying hello to the Big Ben. That's why I headed to visit some wine cellars on my second day in this beautiful harbour city. And to be honest, I had no idea Porto wine came in white as well! ...and that I didn't enjoy the wines too much. They were a bit too sweet and strong. But it's always a good idea to try new things, right? I visited Taylor's and the tour+three wines was 5 euros.

And guess what? It was raining like crazy during the whole day, of which I was extremely bitter. Luckily I got to see the most important places during the first day (in posts 1, 2 and 3) , but I would've wanted to walk on the bridge and take breathtaking photos. Oh well. Why, oh why, didn't I buy tickets for an earlier train to Lisbon? I don't recall doing anything special at all after the wine tasting that afternoon. (Except for taking a photo in the rain with the famous bridge!)

Oottekos te käyneet maistelemassa viinejä?
So, have you been wine tasting?

The majestically beautiful café in Porto

If you're up for a unique coffee experience, there's only one place you should head in Porto and that's Majestic Café. Yes, lots of tourists go there but it isn't necessarily a bad thing - on the contrary, it might just prove the coffee shop's greatness. The waiters are wearing suits, the whole café is decorative and the service makes you feel like a princess. What more could you possible ask for? Oh yes, the coffee. I enjoyed my four-euro cup, even though that's ridiculously expensive for Portugal (...but nothing too dear compared to Finland) Porto is small enough that I guarantee you'll accidentally run into this coffee shop that's located on the main shopping street.

The Harry Potter-esque bookshop - Lello & Irmão

As a devoted Harry Potter fan who also happens to have a thing for beautiful places, it was clear I had to visit the book shop Lello & Irmão during my stay in Porto. After all, J.K. Rowling's masterpieces were enormously inspired by Portugal, as you can see just by looking at this shop. Straight out of a magical Harry Potter film, right? Also, the founder of Slytherin, Salazar, is not just any good name, since Portugal's fascist dictator was called Salazar, too. It's easy to see the influence of Porto and Portugal when you put it all together.

Nykyään tuonnekin täytyy maksaa sisäänpääsymaksu, mikä on sinänsä ymmärrettävää kun suurin osa jengistä menee ihastelemaan kauppaa eikä tekemään ostoksia. Lipun hinnan (3€) saa kuitenkin hyvityksenä takaisin, jos päätyy ostamaan kirjan. Kerroin viime postauksesta upeasta kahvilasta, jonka makuun pääsette seuraavassa postauksessa! J.K. Rowlingin kerrotaan muutenkirjoittaneensielläHarry Potteria.

They have a three-euro entrance fee which I kind of understand since people just come in to gaze at the shop, not to buy books. However if you buy a book, you''ll be refunded the price of the ticket. Do you remember how I promised to show you another magical place apart from this one, namely a coffee shop where JK Rowling wrote Harry Potter? We'll get down to that in the next post!

Greetings from the picturesque city of Porto

Heii!

Heyy! Finally, we get to deal with Portugal which I'm really excited about! I arrived in Porto so late that it was impossible to do some sightseeing. Just imagine: I was alone in the rain, dragging my suitcase towards the house of my couch surfing host all wet and tired after 9 hours in the bus. But I made it up by getting up early the following morning, which was much to my luck a nice and sunny day. I went to see the São Bento train station, all the cute alleyways, the main shopping street and the riverside with a little cruise. When the night fell, I visited the most beautiful book shop in the world and a gorgeous coffee place in Porto, both of which I will tell about in latter posts.

I see Porto as a lovely romantic holiday place or as a relaxing beach resort with a touch of an old town feel. The best thing is that you can pretty much walk everywhere if we count out the wine cellars and the beach which are a few kilometres away. In Porto, you'll get to know the streets in two days but there will still be lots to see and experience - even if it's on a small scale.
