Thank you crazy, stressful and awesome 2015!

This year must have been by far the most awesome one up until now. (Why do I feel like I'm saying this every year over and over again??) I could explain everything that happened during these 365 days but that would probably entertain no one. So I saved the highlights for the blog and here they come!

TAMMI-MAALISKUU

JANUARY-MARCH
January is merely full of vague, study-related memories, but in February things took off and a lot started happening. Most of my time was put into studying for my final exams  panicking about final exams and the last straw for me was a B (LEMCBA > it's the second worst mark) in maths' preliminary exam, even though I've always been a good student. Listening comprehensions became everyday life for me, penkkarit (the hugest high school party) was nearing and I, the youngest one of all, turned 18! In March, we left for Budapest and spent four unforgettable days there. We went through a bit of tension because Norwegian decided to call a strike during our journey and I would have my important national test in Finnish only a few days after our trip. In Finland we missed our bus and took a somewhat fishy carshare back to Kuopio.

HUHTI-TOUKOKUU

APRIL-MAY
The spring is usually off for students who are ending their school and have taken their final exams, but it surely wasn't like that for me. I had to suffer boring obligatory courses I had left hanging on and I scraped together interesting subjects like Russian and art philosophy to keep me going. In May, I visited my friend in Oulu and we did a mini trip to Haaparanta in Sweden. Then it was already time to celebrate my graduation, and my day was in all respect emotional, extraordinary and lovely. My leaving certificate says LLEMMMM and I was so disappointed with two of the Ms that, bursting with anger, I swore I would redo them.

KESÄKUU-ELOKUU

JUNE-AUGUST
The day after my party, I set off towards Stockholm, were I would spend the next three months working as a home service person for the elderly. Having had to study, organize the party and pack my suitcase, I didn't even have time to realize what I was about to do until I was in the aeroplane, gazing out of the window holding back my tears. Ironically, a song called Om vingarna bär by Lilla Sällskapet was playing in the background and I pondered whether it told about my life or about the aircraft's carrying capacity. Well, anyway. I made a bunch of wonderful friends, got new working experience, language skills and life experience in general. We lived in a commune, teased each other and shared just about everything we had. Stockholm became familiar for me, as well as Uppsala which I visited a couple of times.

SYYSKUU-JOULUKUU

SEPTEMBER-DECEMBER
In September, I returned to Finland for three weeks to see my friends and family and to complement my undergraduate degree with Swedish. Then I already had to leave for Spain where I'd be spending the next eight...nine...maybe ten months as an au pair. I arrived to a welcoming family in Guadalajara, but quickly realised that it wasn't the best possible place for me. The city was dead and I was scared to tell the family about my feelings because in the worst case scenario I could've ended up on the streets. However, that didn't happen and I'm so happy I had the courage to change families. Ever since I've travelled to destinations closer and further away like Barcelona, Alcalá de Henares, Toledo and Ávila.

Doing this post made me realize that I'm not a lifestyle blogger... I have no photos besides my travel ones! At the moment I'm in Lisbon, so you'll hear more about that later on! Happy near year everybody!

My Christmas in Spain part 1/2

On the side of the road was a small cluster of houses, after which the fields continued farther than the eye could see. Yep, there it was, namely our village called Langa. It really was only a handful of houses in the middle of nowhere (531 inhabitants in 2015) To be frank, I felt uncomfortable going there - or even spending Christmas, really - because during the Christmas days my sociability and language skills would be pushed to the limits with people I barely knew.

No mutta. Mitäs me sitten tehtiin?

But anyhow, what did we do then? First we met the children's lovely grandmother, who happened to have nice chickens and cats, but whose house was freezing. The word cold got a whole new meaning (and I'm saying this as a Finn!) because the houses in the village weren't familiar with the concept of heating and even if they were, most of the heat would have been lost due to structural matters. Hence, we hung out in the kitchen, which was the only warm room, and which had a cosy couch and chairs. We left our stuff at our country house and went to see Father Christmas who was making kids happy by giving out goodie bags in the village's ballroom.

In Spain they eat just as much as we do in Finland and even more if possible. Our three course dinner easily lasted up to four hours and discussion arose from everything - nine Spaniards (and one Finn) can only mean one thing... way too much noise and shouting. When we were finishing our first course, my host father casually said that there will be some lasagne and pig next and that's when you should've seen my face. At least my host father burst into laughter and the cousin stated that one gains four kilos during Christmas. I miss Finnish Christmas food, but the heavenly shrimps, village-made white wine and salmon helped a little bit.

In the beginning, it was so strenuous to introduce myself to all the family, try to have conversations with them and keep my mind in Spanish 24/7. You know, one day was enough to get an overdose of new people and language. It felt kind of weird to be in another family celebrating their holidays, which is comprehensible since I'm only a temporary au pair, but during dinnertime I wasn't left out at all - vice versa! So many people were yelling at me that I didn't know with whom to talk first. I think it's fun to share bits from Finland, so we ended up laughing at words like "moi" (hello), "moimoi"(goodbye) and "joulu" (Christmas)

P.S. Ensi viikko menee Portugalissa, mutta saatan ajastaa pari postausta sille ajalle! Näkyillään myöhemmin!

In the middle of all this craziness, I realized how integrated I am to the Spanish culture and how I wouldn't experience anything this unique if I was living here alone. P.S. I'll spend next week in Portugal, but there might be a couple of timed posts waiting for you! See you later!

I know what I want to do!

My friends would say I'm a very contemplative person for whom decision making is close to impossible. I know that's true, but there's also another side of me: the one who gets crazy ideas and starts giving them 110%. Choosing the perfect chocolate bar is a task as well as deciding what optionals to take in secondary school. In upper secondary school, I used to change my timetables and subjects just before the period changed but what can do I? That's what I'm like

Jokunen viikko sitten sain yhden yllämainitsemistani loistavista ideoista ja keksin sellaisen pienen jutun kuin mitä haluan opiskella. Sehän on päivänselvää! Haluan opiskella englannin kieltä! Minulle on tärkeää jatkaa kielten opiskelua, joten miksi en vaan jatkaisi yliopistotasolla. Sitä paitsi useimmat englannin kielen ohjelmat tarjoavat mahdollisuuden opiskella toistakin kieltä, joka minun tapauksessa olisi ranska tai vaikkapa joku kokonaan uusi kieli.

A few weeks ago I got one of those previously mentioned crazy ideas and figured out just a little thing, namely what I want to study in the future. It's crystal clear! I want to study English! For me it's vital to continue learning languages, so why not continue them at university level. And besides, most of the English studies programmes offer an opportunity to study another language too, which in my case would be French or even a whole new language.

Let's put this straight. I've never been particularly interested in studying English. When I was in primary school, I wouldn't do my reading homework because "I already speak English!!" and in upper secondary school I started doing my homework properly only when we were learning vocabulary interesting enough. I felt like crying when our student counsellor took a look at my grades and suggested studying English in the university, even though I told him well that I'm interested in other languages and the media.

Päätöksen inspiroimana sain vielä lisää puhtia tankata espanjaa, jotta olisi jotain mahdollisuuksia pärjätä espanjankielisessä koulussa sekä käsittämättömän inspiraation opetella lisää englantia. Ostin J.K.

Inspired by my decision, I got lots of energy to study Spanish so that I'd some day be able to study in that language and also an incredible burst of inspiration to study English. I bought The Casual Vacancy by J.K. Rowling, downloaded BBC's news app and started watching videos on Engvid. I also started to google contexts of difficult words in contrast to before when I would have ignored them because " I kind of know what they mean" I know my English is fluent, but suddenly I realize that there's so much to learn and I want to learn it all.

I don't know if you can tell me excitement from the other side of the screen, but I'm really happy I have some kind of a plan. A path to follow. It doesn't matter if it turns out to be the wrong path, because at least I know what I want to try. First I'd like to have my gap year in France, though, and dedicate it for learning French. I'll just have to hope that French universities won't be too tempting...

Or I might just change my plans next week - who knows.

Positives from December

I think it's time for one positive post to salute the dark and cold December! I love reading these kinds of posts in other people's blogs especially if they contain something deeper than "got a new lip gloss, got a new iPhone, got a new training bag" You know well what I mean! Anyways, these are the things that have been lightening up my days lately

 1.  Osaan vihdoin suunnistaa joten kuten Madridin keskustassa kävellen - toisin sanoen, pystyn osoittamaan, minne suuntaan mikäkin tie vie Puerta del Solilta.

 1.  Finally, I am able to navigate by foot in the centre of Madrid. That is to say, I can point which is which direction from Puerta del Sol. This really calms me, who has the worst sense of direction ever, down and makes me feel like I've achieved something.

 2.  It's always fun to watch performances, but what's even more fun is getting to be part of them! We were dragged in to this show with my friend so we danced in front of the audience and helped the guys in their break dance stunt. I'd like to learn to dance so bad and join a theatre group again!

 3.  I'm able to keep up a meaningful conversation in Spanish if I try hard enough. Emphasizing the words if I try. I really just have stop fooling around and decide to speak Spanish instead of English. Of course my vocabulary isn't that great, but it will expand if I'm helped!

 4.  We're in a shop and I'm explaining something in Spanish when suddenly my limited vocabulary hits me and I pondered aloud: "Como se dice show in español??" (How'd you say show in Spanish) That's when the shop assistant helps and casually says it's enseñar.

 5.  When one of he biggest sources of my happiness is looking for things to do, places to eat in, busses, different districts, hostels and couch surfing in Portugal... pretty much everything related to it!

Manner-Espanja on kaukana paratiisista)

 8.  Olen löytänyt kaikkea jännää tekemistä Madridista tylsien päivien varalle. Täytyy ainakin testata joulunaikaan olevaa jättipomppulinna, kokeilla jotakin kylpylää, mennä Titanic-näyttelyyn ja kokeilla Embajadoresin kulttuurikeskusta!

 6.  Some would say that the language exchanges are repeating themselves but for me, Thursdays signify interesting conversations in an international atmosphere (and of course practicing languages, too!) Every time these gatherings have lots of lovely and like-minded people.

 7.  It'd be wrong not to mention the wonderful shining thing in the sky, which is also known as the sun. I am just infinitely happy to be in country where there's reasonably warm and no snow nor slush. (Not every day, though, but most of the time yes. +The evenings are cold. The mainland is far from paradise)

 8.  I've found all sorts of fun things to do in Madrid. At Christmas time, there's a huge bouncy castle I want to try and I also have to test some spa, go to a Titanic exhibition and see the community centre of Embajadores!

 9.  I've bought my Christmas pressies and their on their way to Finland. Hopefully they find their way to the destination!

 10.  Taking care of the children has become much easier than in the beginning, so I guess you can improve in au pairing too.

Pitäisi varmaan alkaa toteuttamaan noita listaamiani asioita! Hyvät viikonloput kaikille!

So that's that. Tonight I'll be babysitting but tomorrow and Sunday I'm free to do whatever I want again. At least I'm going to meet lots of friends, that's for sure. After the weekend, I can just go into my shell and be hermit again haha. Should put my words into practice and try out the things I listed! Happy weekend to everyone!

How does 8 weeks in Spain feel like?

Every now and then, I catch myself wondering what I am doing here in Spain. A freedom like this is the best type there is: practically, I'm not studying or working but I've still made my way to stay abroad. It's also pretty insane that I have a Spanish family, friends with whom I plan weekends and a home that's the safest place on earth. These are the things that make life worth living no matter where you are. I was dreaming of this journey during high school but now I'm missing my safe and sound school including the long school days, friends and teachers.

I've been meeting so freaking amazing people in language exchange nights. I just don't know if I'm ever going to meet them again which is a bit sad, to say the least. But with one of them I met without any specific plans. We walked around the darkening city of Madrid and hung out in parks discussing profound thoughts. He had a lot to say about Madrid, its youth and immigrants and I had lots to tell about the life of an au pair, Finnishness and adapting to life in Spain. I was laughing at his impersonation of the Mexican accent and showed in turn the difference between Finnish Swedish and Swedish spoken in Sweden. Apparently the one spoken in Sweden sounded more stupid.

Yksi espanjalainen halusi tietää tarkalleen, mistä Kalevala kertoo, joten hämmentyneenä yritin kaivaa muistini perukoilta sen vähäisen sivistyksen, jonka lukio on tarjonnut minulle.

Nevertheless, I'm so surprised how much people know about Finland even if they can't really point it on the map. Since the first things that spring to my mind are the cold, darkness and grey people, it's difficult for me to understand how excited some one can be about my country. Like... there was a South American girl who wanted to know if we really are crazy enough to go to saunas and hit ourselves with silver birch branches and run into the ice cold lake after that. I approved; of course we do that. A Spanish guy wanted to know what our epic folklore poetry Kalevala is about so I did my best and tried to tell him all I remember about it.

During my first days here in Spain, I invariable cried every night. I was going through more things that I could handle. And I'm not only talking about the culture and the language, but all the mundane things: I didn't know how to get around in the small town, I didn't know the family's habits let alone the family, I hadn't had the opportunity to make friends and would let the days go by alone and confused and I was even unable to prepare myself anything for lunch because the ingredients and stove were different! All of this just hit me in the face. I hadn't expected it. I think all is great now, since I can cure homesickness by listening to Swedish music - I just prefer it to Finnish - and sharing my experiences with the other Finns.

New challenges await abroad

Do you know the feeling, when you're rushing towards something new and you hardly know what's going to happen? Yep, that's how I've been feeling the past few days. All young people know that applying for summer jobs has reached its climax and any moment now we get to know about job interviews or prospective jobs. This time hard work payed off - just not really like I had expected.

Stressed about matriculation examination, finding a job and thinking about different universities, I applied for several jobs without really thinking whether the open position was suitable for me. I filled in half the information for my Nordjobb profile carelessly and had already forgotten about it for a while. Then, all of a sudden, they sent me a message asking me whether I was interested in care work in Stockholm. After a presentation letter, a couple of e-mails and lots n lots of translations from Swedish to Finnish, the position was confirmed and I'll be spending June, July and August in Stockholm. Oh gosh!

Stockholm isn't very far away nor is it exotic, but Sweden is still another country where they speak a totally different language. Living in a studio/shared apartment/whatevertheyfindme will be different from living at my parents. Getting around in a big city (Stockholm is big compared to Kuopio!) and all the spare time activities are a whole new ballgame over there. I'm also a bit worried about using a new language, since I've had a one-year break from studying Swedish and now I actually have to get along with at work 7.5 hours a day. And I don't even know exactly what I'll be doing at work!

Näistä on ihan hyvä aloittaa.

But I've got trust and confidence and know that these things will figure themselves out. I'm sure I'll get to know other "nordjobbers" since we have a nice little Facebook group as well. I just really hope that work and free time will be in perfect balance, because I said I could also do night shifts and weekends. Oh well. The next month and a half I'll just have to brush up my Swedish by attending my two last courses of Swedish in high school as conscientiously as I can and practice Swedish in other ways - that means I have a good reason to put on Veronica Maggio and watch a couple of episodes of the Moomins! I think this is a good start.

There's just one thing, which I don't like: filling out taxing information in Swedish. It was quite close to hell, you know. At least before the time I figured out, that there's actually instructions to help us fill in the forms on Facebook... Way to go, Rosa! And way to go everyone who managed to read the whole of this super long post of thoughts buzzing in my head. If you know any good books, series or movies in Swedish , let me know! Now I'm just gonna wish you all a very happy weekend

Plans for New York City

Hey guys! Sorry for the massive break in my blog posts. It feels as if during summer I was blogging every other day and now the pace is more like every other month. But no worries, I will get a grip of myself, since there are no matriculation exams or other stressful factors in my life, and continue this happy blogging.

I have been excited and looking forward to our trip to New York, which will be my first trip ever to America. Since I don't know when or whether I'll be returning to New York, I decided to listen to my father's advice and plan a little what I'll want to see and do. We are staying for a week, so we'll have to see what we have time to do, of course.

How to make studying easier

I've been starting to question the accuracy of some longer words in Finnish - my native language! - such as harvinainen (=rare) and näyteikkuna (=display window)

I guess that is what long summer holidays and a sudden start of school do to you.

Or the fact that you haven't been writing long texts in any other languages than English. Or maybe you've just got too much on your mind. Whoops. At the moment, my timetable is just about full of languages which means that I actually have over 10 hours of English every week and some hours of Spanish and French. But what about the subject that is not a language?

Well, the odd one out is psychology. Which I truly, immensely adore, but for some reason, there has now been a slight decrease in my motivation towards the whole subject. And actually, I wouldn't necessarily talk of a slight decrease... All the famous psychologists and their theories, and especially putting their theories into practice by writing long essays with clarifying examples, which are full of scientific vocabulary, make me feel tired and hopeless. Blurgh. I'm just fed up with it.
