My first couchsurfing experience + tips for you

Täällä toivottiin couchsurfing-kokemuksista postausta, joten sen toteutan mielelläni! Yövyin 26-vuotiaan yksinasuvan naisen luona, jonka asunto oli kolmisen kilometriä Porton keskustasta. Nukkuminen tapahtui olohuoneen lattialla ilmapatjan, suuren peittokasan ja tyynyn kanssa. En tiennyt yhtään etukäteen, kuinka paljon tulisin viettämään aikaa hostini kanssa tai miltä tuntuisi yöpyä tuntemattoman kanssa, mutta halusin kokeilla jotain uutta. Sitä se todellakin oli!

I was requested to do a post about couch surfing, so that's what I'm going to give you today! I stayed at a 26-year-old woman who lived about three kilometres away form Porto's centre. An air mattress, a big pile of blankets and a pillow made my sleeping quite comfortable. Because I had no idea how much time I'd spend with my host and what it would feel like to bunk in another person's house, I took this as an adventure. And that's what it surely was!

Parasta couchsurfingissa oli se, että pääsi hetkeksi kontaktiin paikallisen kanssa, näki erilaista asuinaluetta jonne ei muuten olisi tullut lähdettyä sekä vinkit, joita host voi antaa esimerkiksi ravintoloiden, kulkuyhteyksien ja nähtävyyksien suhteen. Tämän lisäksi koko kokemus ei maksa yhtikäs mitään.

The best thing about couch surfing is the contact to the local people - you get to see a side of the country you wouldn't see in a hotel. Also you probably get to see new neighbourhoods, know some local customs and get some tips regarding the transport and sightseeing. And to top it off, all of this is free. 

Kuulostaa liian hyvältä ollakseen totta? No, ei sentään. Yli kymmenen tunnin matkustelun jälkeen olisin vain halunnut lösähtää sänkyyn, mutta piti heti yrittää olla sosiaalinen. Meidän ikäero ja täysin erilaiset elämäntilanteet eivät varsinaisesti tuoneet meitä lähelle toisiamme ja nyt jälkeenpäin mietittynä yöpyisin ehkä mieluummin jonkun opiskelijan luona. Tuntui myös vähän oudolta tepastella ympäri taloa ja huutaa aamulla moikat, kun kämpän omistaja nukkui. Kaikesta huolimatta, kokemus oli positiivinen ja tekisin sen uudelleenkin, vaikka tulen varmasti valitsemaan mieluummin vauhdikkaan hostellin.

Sounds too good to be true? Well, not really. After ten hours of travelling I would've wanted to slump down on to the bed, but I had to be sociable. Our age difference and different situations in life didn't exactly bring us close together and rethinking the situation I might have rather gone for some host who was a student. It also felt weird to go around the house while the owner or the apartment was sleeping or to shout "see you later!" before starting sightseeing. Nevertheless, my experience was positive and I would totally do it again, even though I'd probably opt for hostels rather than couch surfing.

+ Kannattaa katsoa profiili tarkkaan varsinkin, jos henkilöstä ei ole annettu paljon palautetta.
+ Ei kannata suunnitella liian tiukkaa aikataulua, sillä luultavasti ei ole mahdollista tulla ja mennä yhtä vapaasti kuin hotellissa.
+ Kannattaa ottaa huomioon, haluaako host sinun tuovan omat makuupussin tai lakanat sekä pyyhkeen.
+ Tärkeintä on vain pysyä avoimena, joustavana ja ystävällisenä! Niillä pärjää pitkälle.
+ Kokemuksen jälkeen palautteen jättäminen on tärkeää!

+ You should take a good look at the person's profile, especially if they don't have lots of references
+ Don't fully plan your visit because you're probably not able to come and go as freely as in a hotel
+ Ask your host if he or she wants you to bring your own sheets, sleeping bag or towel
+ The most important thing is to stay open-minded and friendly.
+ After the experience, it's important that both leave references for each other.

3 ridiculously cheap (and good!) bars in Madrid

Koska ruoka on olennainen osa kulttuuria, ajattelin jakaa myös vinkit syömisiin ja juomisiin Madridissa. Mulla onkin kehitteillä ties minkälaista ruoka-aiheista postausta, mutta sellainen olennaina asia kuin kuvamateriaali puuttuu, joten ruokapostaukset näkevät päivänvalon vähän myöhemmin. Tänä tiistaina kerron parista naurettavan halvasta baari-kahvilasta teille. Tai no, ehkä oikea sana kuvaamaan näitä olisi cervecería, eli karkeasti suomennettuna olutpaikka.

As food is an integral part of a culture, I thought I'd share some tips for getting the best dining experiences in Madrid. I got a sudden drive to do all sorts of food-related posts, but there's just one little thing... I'm lacking photos. That's why the delicious posts remain to see their daylight for a little more. This Tuesday, I'm gonna tell you about three really cheap places to sit down, have a beer and enjoy life. 

100 Montaditos
Ah, cien montaditos. Näitten erikoisuus on minipatongit, joita löytyy about 50 eri makua kanasta hot dogiin ja tortillasta serranokinkkuun. Ja eivät todellakaan ole hinnalla pilattuja, sillä muistelen, että kaikki - tapakset, juomat ja patongit - maksavat alle 3€. Kaiken kukkuraksi näillä on keskiviikkoisin ja sunnuntaisin kaikki menun patongit 1€! Näitä ravintoloita on ympäri kaupunkia ja pelkästään ydinkeskustassa tulet luultavasti käpsimään ainakin yhden ohi.

Oh, Cien Montaditos, how I love you. The reason for my love is their mini baguettes which they have in about 50 different flavours - anything from chicken to hot dogs or from tortilla to serrano ham. Everything on the menu - that is to say, the mini baguettes, tapas and drinks - cost under 3€ and are reaaally tasty. Also, did I mention that all the baguettes are for 1€ on Wednesdays and Sundays?!

Mercado Provenzal
Ootteko koskaan nähneet olutta 40 sentillä? Voitte vastata myönteisesti, jos menette Mercado Provenzaliin! Ruokia en menisi niinkään kehumaan, mutta kahville, limpparille tai oluelle tämä on juuri sopiva.

Have you ever seen beer for 40 cents? You can definitely say 'yes' after visiting Mercado Provenzal! I wouldn't go crazy for their food, but this is the place to be for a coffee, beer or coca cola!

Copasista löytyy pieniä patonkeja, hot dogeja, pirtelöitä, ranskalaisia ja vaikka minkälaisia halpoja juomia - valikoimaa riittää. Parasta on myös ihmiset, sillä täällä liikkuu pääosin nuorta porukkaa.  Ai niin, ja La Latinan copasissa on torstaisin kieli-ilta, joten ainakin silloin baari täyttyy kansainvälisestä väestä! (ja sieltä minutkin löytää notkumasta, hahhah)

Copas has small baguettes, hot dogs, milkshakes, french fries and all sorts of cheap drinks - their list is incredibly long. Also the young clientele is a plus, of course. By the way, it's this very place where they have language exchanges, so if you're feeling like meeting awesome people, head to +KCopas in La Latina on Thursday evenings!

Näihin tunnelmiin mä toivotan kaikille oikein hyvää joulua! ♥ Me pakataan kimpsut ja kampsut ja lähdetään mun perheen kylään jouluksi, joka sijaitsee melkein parin tunnin ajomatkan päässä Madridista. Mieluusti päivittäisin sieltä jotain, mutta internetin toimiminen voi olla vähän vaakalaudalla - en tiedä ollenkaan, kuinka korvessa tulemme olemaan. Jälkeen päin jaan teille mun kokemuksia espanjalaisesta joulusta!

So I'll just wish you all a very merry Christmas! ♥ Tomorrow we're going to pack our stuff and leave for the family's village, which is about a two-hour drive away from Madrid. I would so love to keep in touch with all of you all but, to be honest, I have no idea if the internet works there or not. I'll share some thoughts about spending Christmas without your family in Spain later then!

Visiting Tallinn on a budget

Getting to Tallinn
I know a lot of you followers behind the screens are Finns, so you've probably been to Tallinn already and know how all the ferries. I noticed that Lindaline is currently the cheapest ferry if you're looking for a transport to the other side of the gulf, not a party yacht. They've also got the shortest travel time by sea! Lindaline is the most reasonable option from Helsinki to Tallinn, if there are no discounts within other companies.

The cheapest flights to Tallinn (within Europe) are operated by Ryanair. They fly from Oslo, Dublin, Manchester, London, Bremen, Dusseldorf and Milan.

If you're coming from Russia, you'll might want to choose the train. At least Moscow and St. Petersburg have fairly quick connections to Tallinn.
