Rome: Trastevere & The River

We went to have dinner in the popular neighbourhood of Trastevere, because that's where Carlo Menta, an inexpensive restaurant recommended by my local friend, was. I'd heard lots of good things about Trastevere in general - it's a bit further away from the historical centre, thus it doesn't have the same touristy feel to it. Our groups communication was quite extraordinary, to say the least, as there were two Italians and two Finns at the table - you could hear a nice little mix of Finnish, Italian, English and Spain - talk about breaking the language barriers!

Some stalls and restaurants by the Tiber river

Pons Aemilius - the broken bridge - in some bokeh

After having eaten in Trastevere, we headed to the river banks where they put up all sorts of food stalls and entertainment. I just had to get the palm tree drink - it was too cute! I jokingly said I'd use it as a water bottle in my lectures :D

A little evening stroll in Trastevere before going back to the flat was spot on. It wasn't too hot and there weren't those ridiculous tourist masses you have at, say, Trevi Fountain or Colosseum. Trastevere had plenty of lovely streets full of feeling, which happened to be rather empty on a Sunday night. We actually talked about that with my friend Giordano and longed for Madrid's people and its energy, which is everywhere. Well, it won't be long until I'll be on the plane towards Madrid again - I'll be there in two weeks time, to be exact!

Liguriassa matkailu - focacciaa, junia ja hellettä

Heippa! Mä olin kokonaisen kuukauden Italiassa au pairina ja ramppasin muutamissa paikoissa junalla Ligurian sisällä, Senpä takia ajattelin koota parit pienet vinkit Liguriassa matkustamiseen.

Nervi (Genova)
Aperitiiveillä

Liikkuminen junilla:

Ruoka:

Rapallo, Santa Margherita, Portofino

Genovan kujat Molon alueella

Scalinata delle Tre Caravelle -puistosta näkyy hyvin Genovan kaupunki
Ensi kerralla laitellaan jotain Rooma -juttua tulemaan.

Minnekäs te olette matkustaneet kesän aikana? Olisi kiva tietää teidän menneet/tulevat reissut!

MADEIRA - A FOODIE'S PARADISE

Hei hei hei hei!

What's this?! How have I not posted this - probably the most important post of Madeira - the food post? Well, luckily Madeira's still in its place and these tips might come in handy later, so let's start!

1. Restaurante do Forte

Alotetaan ehkä upeimmalla näistä, eli linnaravintolalla.
We'll start with the possibly most gorgeous one, the Fort restaurant.

Kaviaaria ja katkarapua / Caviar and prawns

Turskaa passionhedelmällä ja banaanilla / Cod with passion fruit and banana

Mille-feuille

We opted for the whole three-course menu, which included different wines and small delicacies in between, too. This was our last dinner together, so we wanted to organise something special: an old car ride! They came to pick us up from our hotel to the restaurant (one of the restaurant's services). And as we got there, another surprise was waiting for us... they sent us to a private viewing point in the castle! Such a shame the castle isn't used as a museum anymore; it's stunning. Anyway, the service was on point and the food was absolutely gorgeous. Thumbs up and a recommendation for all of you! In the nightfall, I wish I'd taken my camera for the food snaps...

2. Scat Music Club & Restaurant
This restaurant was right by our hotel so of course we had to test it.

Täälläkin otettiin koko ateriat ja kuten kuvista näkyy, en voinut vastustaa Madeiran passionhedelmäruokia. Tuo limesorbetti oli hauskasti jään sisällä tarjoiltuna! Lemppariksi nousi tuo alkupala, jossa oli tosi erilaisia makuyhdistelmiä leipien päällä. Livemusiikki loi kivaa tunnelmaa ravintolassa.

We went for the whole menu here as well and, as you can probably see, I just couldn't resist the Madeira's passion fruit foods. That lime sorbet was cleverly served inside an ice! If I had to pick a favourite, it would definitely be the starter which combined different flavours on four small pieces of baguette. Yum. The live music was a nice little plus.

3. Casino
Tänne lähdettiin katsomaan musikaaliesitystä, ei pelaamaan uhkapelejä, heh.
We went here to enjoy a dinner musical, not to gamble. Haha.

I have to come clean and tell you guys that I did use the five-euro voucher we were given in a strategic pirate game, which I didn't understand at all. Probably better that way... won't be gambling in the future lol. For dinner, we had a goat cheese-spring roll (which was SO good even though I've never liked goat cheese!), fish with mashed potatoes and vegetables and some sort of vanilla thing whose name I can't remember right off the top of my head. After we'd eaten the main courses, some singers and dancers came up on the stage and started to perform cheerful songs. They sure were talented, but I was looking forward to seeing some theatre-like performance with props and a plot.

Ihana paikka!

Not a surprise that my absolute favourite was the fort restaurant. So head there, if you're visiting Funchal, Madeira! Such a lovely place!

Madrid's Secret Café You Have To Visit

First I want to say that I'm glad to see new smiling faces among the followers even though I've been extraordinarily inactive on my blog. So, I wish you all a warm welcome to my blog! This time it's time to babble about a super beautiful place in Madrid, which many don't know of and that's Jardin Secreto Salvador Bachiller.

The name itself gives it away if you know Spanish but just make sure: it's a secret garden in the middle of the city. And I'm pretty sure you wouldn't stumble upon it if you didn't know about it, so listen up! The thing is that the café doesn't have its own door, you have to go through a clothing shop on Calle Montera 37 and take a lift to the the fourth floor. Then you'll reach this wonderful place!

Uudestaan, please!

The day we visited the secret gardens was my last day in Madrid and I have to admit that we chose the perfect place. The wine and tapas culture is so strong in Spain that I find it difficult to find nice coffee shops in Madrid. Of course there's Starbucks and Pans but they don't satisfy me. My coffee and yogurt cost me eight euros, which is way above the average prices in Spain, but it's doable in this special place. They also had all sorts of cakes as well as breakfast and lunch meals, which make me want to go again. I'm really hoping to go there again!

Mä haluisin kuulla jostain kauniista ravintolasta tai kahvilasta, jossa te ootte käynyt!
Now I'd like to hear about a beautiful restaurant or coffee shop you've been to!

3 ridiculously cheap (and good!) bars in Madrid

Koska ruoka on olennainen osa kulttuuria, ajattelin jakaa myös vinkit syömisiin ja juomisiin Madridissa. Mulla onkin kehitteillä ties minkälaista ruoka-aiheista postausta, mutta sellainen olennaina asia kuin kuvamateriaali puuttuu, joten ruokapostaukset näkevät päivänvalon vähän myöhemmin. Tänä tiistaina kerron parista naurettavan halvasta baari-kahvilasta teille. Tai no, ehkä oikea sana kuvaamaan näitä olisi cervecería, eli karkeasti suomennettuna olutpaikka.

As food is an integral part of a culture, I thought I'd share some tips for getting the best dining experiences in Madrid. I got a sudden drive to do all sorts of food-related posts, but there's just one little thing... I'm lacking photos. That's why the delicious posts remain to see their daylight for a little more. This Tuesday, I'm gonna tell you about three really cheap places to sit down, have a beer and enjoy life.

100 Montaditos
Ah, cien montaditos. Näitten erikoisuus on minipatongit, joita löytyy about 50 eri makua kanasta hot dogiin ja tortillasta serranokinkkuun.

Oh, Cien Montaditos, how I love you. The reason for my love is their mini baguettes which they have in about 50 different flavours - anything from chicken to hot dogs or from tortilla to serrano ham. Everything on the menu - that is to say, the mini baguettes, tapas and drinks - cost under 3€ and are reaaally tasty. Also, did I mention that all the baguettes are for 1€ on Wednesdays and Sundays?!

Bubblegum cocktails and hot dogs in +KCopas // the famous mini baguettes in 100 Montaditos
Mercado Provenzal

Have you ever seen beer for 40 cents? You can definitely say 'yes' after visiting Mercado Provenzal! I wouldn't go crazy for their food, but this is the place to be for a coffee, beer or coca cola!

+KCopas
Copasista löytyy pieniä patonkeja, hot dogeja, pirtelöitä, ranskalaisia ja vaikka minkälaisia halpoja juomia - valikoimaa riittää. Parasta on myös ihmiset, sillä täällä liikkuu pääosin nuorta porukkaa.  Ai niin, ja La Latinan copasissa on torstaisin kieli-ilta, joten ainakin silloin baari täyttyy kansainvälisestä väestä! (ja sieltä minutkin löytää notkumasta, hahhah)

Copas has small baguettes, hot dogs, milkshakes, french fries and all sorts of cheap drinks - their list is incredibly long. Also the young clientele is a plus, of course. By the way, it's this very place where they have language exchanges, so if you're feeling like meeting awesome people, head to +KCopas in La Latina on Thursday evenings!

So I'll just wish you all a very merry Christmas! ♥ Tomorrow we're going to pack our stuff and leave for the family's village, which is about a two-hour drive away from Madrid. I would so love to keep in touch with all of you all but, to be honest, I have no idea if the internet works there or not. I'll share some thoughts about spending Christmas without your family in Spain later then!

Fajitas in Madrid

Hola!

Hola! This is where I would upload all my Madrid photos... if I had some. Namely, these two are the only ones we took: our delicious food in Friday's and proof that I actually have a friend with me. Haha. We went through a couple of shops and, most importantly, met my future au pair family. They seemed really friendly and laid-back and I'm feeling so relieved that everything's working out right now.

Back in Guadalajara I decided to take the bus home, since the night was starting to fall. I had never used the buses here, so I relied on a local who was also waiting for the bus. A map with my home circled on it as my guiding light, I asked him if he knew how I could get home. We kept talking for a while before the bus came and let me tell you, it was just terrible! I told him I was an au pair here and I think not many know what au pairs even do judging by his marveling look. Before I had a chance to specify that I work with kids, he said: "Oh wow, opera! I haven't really listened to Finnish classical music... but I have a friend who used to play the violin"

Voitteko kuvitella? Olin aivan liian väsynyt korjaamaan häntä, joten mietin vain mielessäni, että en minäkään pahemmin tunne suomalaista klassista musiikkia. Tuli suorastaan mieleen ne lukion Dime! -kirjasarjan muka-hauskat kielikömmähdykset.

Can you imagine? I didn't bother to correct him and just thought to myself: I know just as little as you about Finnish classical music. You know, the whole situation reminded me of the oh-so-funny mistakes in our high school Spanish books.

5x ravintolavinkit Tukholmaan

Let's go!

Exit lounge bar Södermalmin Götgatanilla tarjoili upeat juomat. Syömistäkin tuolta olisi saanut, mutta sillä hetkellä nuo juomien mukana tulleet pähkinät riittivät vallan mainiosti. Tänne suunnataan, jos haluaa rentoon hengailupaikkaan viikonloppuna. Tänne - kuten varmaan kaikkiin istuskelupaikkoihin - kannattaa tulla ajoissa, sillä kymmenen aikaan paikat täyttyvät väestä!

Jenses Böfhus on pihviravintola jossa tein suorastaan myötähäpeää aiheuttavan valinnan: tilasin salaatin.

Jenkkityylisiä Friday's -ravintoloita on Tukholmassa kaksi kappaletta.

This became such a long post sooo English version is coming up later!

Café tip for Stockholm

P6040308
P6040307
P6260838P6040316 Puskaradio hoiti homman kotiin.

We got a recommendation from our room mate to go to Café 60, which was a great start for the whole fika culture. A few times we have been there contemplating whether we should have a slice of chocolate cake or cheesecake and it's been just as lovely every time. I guess they have good pastries all over Stockholm, but Café 60 has so much to choose from regarding the cakes. You really have to visit this place when you're in Stockholm! It's located fairly near Sergel's square on Svevägen 60.

Chicago musical & great dining at Times Square

On our fourth evening in New York, we went to see the Chicago musical. I've always been interested in theater and performing arts, so it was really exciting to see a legendary show in one of the most famous places in the world - Broadway. We didn't book tickets for the first nights just so that we wouldn't doze off during the show... Now that would have been a shame, to miss half of a show you've paid for!

I've got no pictures of the show since photographing was prohibited, which was, of course, comprehensible. Sadly, I have to say the show didn't fully meet my expectations. I had imagined the hall and stage huge, but they were quite small, after all. The first row was only about one meter away from the stage! I think that tells a lot.

But it certainly wasn't the size of the theater that left me feeling empty. I was a bit disappointed with the simple plot, which contained absolutely no turning points or excitement. I expected a bit more glamour. The performance was lacking props too! To be honest, there wasn't any set pieces if we don't count the actors' costumes and a few chairs. A bit too minimalist for  me. But I do praise the actors; they were talented and sang extremely well. The dancing was spectacular also, of course. I'm afraid all these things didn't make up for the dull story - if ever there was one. I think it would have been better to see a Disney musical, such as Aladdin, on Broadway but I this wasn't exactly waste of time either.

Just a New Yorker police on a horse in the middle of Times Square!

After doing some serious shopping, we went dining in a colourful restaurant called Planet Hollywood. It's famous for its decoration which includes authentic set pieces from different movies. For example. there were big aeroplanes hanging above us and a costume from Hangover 3 in a showcase. My brother and I had classic American hamburgers at this place: a ridiculously huge steak with some cheese, bacon and onions. And to finish it off, I ordered an Oreo milkshake for dessert. I had been looking for a good old American milkshake the whole of our trip, so I was more than pleased to get this. It must have been one of the best milkshakes I've tried!

The avocado berry salad my way

Hey guys! On Monday I had a day off, which is quite rare for me, so I decided to make something good as, for once, I had time. I spotted this recipe on my laptop's MSN application, which pops up on the start screen. It's called the Anti-aging avocado berry salad with mango vinaigrette. The salad inspired me with its cool combination of contrasting flavours, so I modified the recipe just a bit to meet my needs and came up with this delicious salad. It's super easy (well, it is only a salad...) and really tasty!

Trip to Tallinn Day 2

Our first destination on the second day was Pirita. It's a neighbourhood 10 kilometres away from the centre of Tallinn so we had to take a bus to get to Pirita beach. The heat was unbearable, once again, so we bought some nice icecream, which, of course, started to melt straight away. It was awesome to walk around in the shallow sea since even after walking metres away from the shore, it was only up to my knees.

After that we walked through a nice little forest well, an area full of trees towards the toilets and shower. We then had to go to the TV tower, which is pretty near to the beach, but it said on our map that it's closed on Tuesdays. I still don't know whether that was true or not, but we decided to go back to the centre. When I rummaged in my wallet for bus money, I realized these 20 cent coins from six different countries. So cool, I just had to capture them! By the way, one student ticket cost 80 cents in Tallinn, which is one quarter of the ticket price in Kuopio. Wow. My Estonian friend told me that the bus is even free for the residents of Tallinn. How awesome is that?

Next we did a bit of shopping at the Rotermann, which has a nice mixture of modern and old buildings. It has to be my favourite shopping area in Tallinn! This time I left empty-handed but at least my wallet wasn't complaining. Haha. We had to check out this renowned pancake house called Kompressor in the Old Town. And I have to admit, those pancakes were delicious! I myself had the feta pancake with smoked chicken and it was such massive a portion I couldn't even finish it! I would've wanted to try the sweet pancakes, but they had to wait as my - just like no one else's - stomach is unbounded. It would be so cool if that weren't the case. I mean, at least when abroad it would be great to taste as many dishes as possible! Did I mention these babies only cost about four euros? Almost too good to be true.

After eating our pancakes, we headed full and satisfied to a tower museum Kiek in de Kök. It basically tells about the Second World War including bombing, plague, weapons and digging the secret tunnels under Tallinn, which still partly remain a mystery. We visited the tunnels on day three, so more of them in the next post.

This five-storey tower didn't have the easiest stairs to climb up.

Museums like this make you think of life today and how much of an impact history has on it. It's weird to think that only thirty years ago Estonia was part of Soviet Union with all the strict regulations... But never mind the past, after the museum it was time to eat (again) so we dined in a pizzeria called Pizza Grande situated in Old Town.

The pizza was the usual, but it was weird how this restaurant had run out of salads and pastas. They had absolutely none of the salads or pasta dishes, even though they had them written on the menu. Doesn't sound very professional... But the pizza was alright. Mine had ham, blue cheese, peach and pineapple in it. Anything with blue cheese is just a 'yes, please' for me! And this last photo is a weird car we came across walking around Old Town. This day was full of seeing new places, walking, eating and just a bit more walking. I had just realised my comfortable flats had officially turned into the shoes from hell. Oh wow. And still one more day to go...
