Ice cream wonderland

Hey guys! A restaurant might not be the first thing to spring to your mind when you start to think about your holiday. Nevertheless, I must mention this ice cream parlour called Latinos, which became one of my favourite places in Saint Raphaël thanks to its marvellous desserts. They had more or less 40 flavours to choose from including the exciting Red Bull and delicious chocolates like Kinder Bueno and Mars. Even their fruit sorbets tasted much better than the regular Finnish ones! It's too bad we don't have these ice creams over here... I guess its one of the privileges of travelling. Eating different kinds of foods... or ice creams, if you like!

EF LANGUAGE COURSES: You asked & I answered

This post is in Finnish, because only Finns had questions about my language course. // Postaus on nyt poikkeuksellisesti suomeksi, koska lähinnä suomalaiset ovat kyselleet multa kielikursseista

Mua on aina askarruttanu, et onko ne kielimatkat oikeestaan vaan sitä bilettämistä? Tuntuu, et kaverit jotka on ollu kielimatkoilla nii hehkuttaa vaan niitä bileitä (ja joitaki nähtävyyksiä).
-Ei ne oikeastaan ole. Arkipäivisin on koulua klo 9-12, jonka jälkeen on iltapäiväohjelma ja iltaohjelma. Joskus saattaa olla lähtö johonkin kaupunkiin suoraan koulun jälkeen tai sitten nämä retket ovat järjestetty viikonlopuille. Toki näillä retkillä näkee hienoja nähtävyyksiä!
Meillä oli kerran viikossa EF:n disco iltaohjelmana, en nyt menis sanomaan sitä hirmuiseksi bilettämiseksi. Kokoonnuttiin kaikki yhteen juttelemaan, tanssimaan ja syömään jotain pikkuherkkuja :)

Mä oon kuullu kaikista EF:n ja STS:n yms. mitä mainostetaan paljon niin paljon kauhutarinoita, etten uskalla lähtä ainakaa niiden kautta mihinkää :D onko tää turha pelko?
-Mulla ei ole kokemusta kuin EF:stä, mutta voin sanoa ettei kannata pelätä. Jos jotain menee pieleen, niin EF:n työntekijät eivät ole mitä luultavimmin syyllisiä siihen. Varsinkin, kun ryhmien koot voivat olla 20-50 ihmistä, paikasta toiseen matkustaminen ynnä muu sellainen on väkisinkin hankalampaa kuin yksin liikkuessa. Liidereillä on muutenkin vastuu kaikista kaiken aikaa, joten itse ainakin koin oloni turvalliseksi matkan aikana. Sitä paitsi, kun kyseessä on matkustelu, kaikki ei välttämättä mene aivan suunnitelmien mukaan. Se on huomattu muillakin matkoilla!

Millanen sun isäntäperhe oli? Olitko yksin?
-Mun isäntäperheeseen kuului yksi eläkkeellä oleva nainen, joka asui kerrostalossa neliössä. Se oli sellanen oikein mukava nainen, joka teki tosi hyvää ruokaa joka päivä.  En ollut yksin, mun kanssa asui yksi ruotsalainen tyttö ja yksi italialainen tyttö. Meillä oli kaikilla jaettu kylpyhuone, joten niistä vuoroista piti aina sopia. Mulla oli oma, suhteellisen iso huone ja nämä muut jako keskenään sitten toisen huoneen. Olin kyllä todella onnellinen, että sain juuri nämä tytöt mun kämppiksiksi, sillä me tutiin tosi hyvin toimeen ja näistä tytöistä tuli mun hyviä ystäviä!

Paraniko kielitaito?
-On tosi vaikeaa mitata, kuinka paljon siellä loppujen lopuksi sitten oppi. Kuuntelun ymmärtäminen parani paljon, koska kieltä kuuli koko ajan ympärillä. Puhuminenkin parani, mutta lähinnä vain sillä lailla, että nyt uskallan mennä rohkeasti puhumaan ranskaa, vaikka tekisikin virheitä. Sattuihan tuolla matkalla vaikka minkälaisia ihmeellisiä tilanteita, joita jouduin selvittelemään ranskaksi ja hyvin tulin ymmärretyksi :D Pointtini on kuitenkin se, että kielimatkalla oppi juuri niitä tärkeimpiä asioita, joita koulussa ei painoteta ollenkaan.

 Kuinka kauan olit lukenu ranskaa ennenku lähit?
-Olin lukenut ranskaa seittämän vuotta. Se kuulostaa paljolta, mutta se ei loppujen lopuksi kerro mitään kommunikointitaidoistani. Sanoisin, että yllättävän vähälläkin pärjää ja uutta oppii koko ajan!

Kuinka paljon rahaa on hyvä varata 3 viikon matkalle?
-Hyvin karkea arvio EF:ltä on, että noin 150€ viikossa olisi sopiva määrä. Mielestäni se on ihan järkevä määrä - olettaen, että et uudista vaatekaappiasi matkan aikana. Paikan päällä joutuu käyttämään rahaa esimerkiksi bussikorttiin, sim-korttiin, taksimatkoihin ja välipaloihin. Monet haluavat varmasti ostaa ylimääräisiä retkiä tai aktiviteetteja, jotka maksavat muutaman kympin sekä shoppailla ja ostaa matkamuistoja.Tarkemmin sanottuna aktiviteetteihin ja retkiin mulla meni ~ 110€, ruokaan ja shoppailuun en tosiaan tiedä kun en pitänyt kirjaa... onkohan ihan väärin, jos sanon että suunnilleen 250€? muihin pakollisiin menoihin ~50€ kuten bussikortti, sim-kortti ja taksimatkat.

Olitsä siellä suomalaisten kanssa?
-Osittain. Kouluryhmässäni ja perheessäni olin ainut suomalainen sekä parilla retkellä tuli hengailtua pelkästään ulkomaalaisten kanssa. Muuten olinkin sitten näitten meikäläisten kanssa. Esimerkiksi koulun jälkeen olin yleensä muiden suomalaisten kanssa ja kaupunkivierailuilla pyörittiin yhessä. Se vähän riippui siitä, että ketä siinä lähellä sattui olemaan, kun pääsi koulusta.

Lähtisitkö uudelleen tai suosittelisitko EF:ää muille?
-Ilman muuta! Kielimatka oli upea kokemus, mutta haluan päästä matkustelemaan mahdollisimman monella tavalla, joten luultavasti en ole lähiaikoina lähdössä uudelleen. Vähän uusia tuulia, niin sanotusti. Ehkä au pairiksi, railaamaan tai muuten vaan töihin ulkomaille. Sanosin, että kielimatkat on kyllä tosi turvallinen tapa matkustaa. Ja erilainen. Siellä kokee niin paljon toisenlaisia juttuja, kuin tavallisella matkalla. Tutustuu niiin moniin uusiin ihmisiin, näkee paljon paikkoja ja tutustuu kunnolla sen maan kulttuuriin käymällä koulua - jota ei kuitenkaan ole liikaa - ja asumalla perheessä.

Kuinka kauan ennen matkaa sinne pitää ilmoittautua?
-Parhaat paikat viedään ensin, joten kannattaa ilmoittautua heti syksyllä, niin ainakin itse tein. Monia paikkoja saa vielä vuodenvaihteessa ja varmasti paikkoja löytyy kevään mittaankin, jos toimistolle soittelee ja selvittää asioita. EF hoiti ainakin minun kohdallani tiedotukset oikein mallikkaasti, muutaman kuukauden välein tipahteli postia kotiin mm. pakollisesta terveystodistuksesta ranskaan ja muista asioista, mitä täytyy muistaa ennen matkaa.

Kuinka paljon matka maksoi? Oliko sen arvoinen?
-Kamala kysymys, varmasti liikaahan se maksoi:D Ihan tarkkaa summaa en muista, mutta se taisi olla siinä 2500€ paikkeilla, kun otettiin vielä Kuopiosta Helsinkiin ja toisin päin jatkolennot. Tuolla rahalla saisi kyllä vaikka minkälaista matkaa, mutta kun ottaa huomioon että tuohon sisältyi lennot, asuminen täysihoidolla, retkiä, aktiviteettejä ja koulu, niin alkaahan sille rahalle tulla vastinetta. Puhumattakaan kaikesta siitä, mitä ei voi rahalla mitata: uusia ystäviä, parempi kielitaito, unohtumattomat kokemukset ja se tunne. Siinä oli vaan jotain erikoista. Taisin mä vähänä itkeekin aurinkolasieni takana eräällä risteilyllä, kun tuuli hulmutti hiuksiani. Tajusin vaan että oon niin onnellinen täällä!

Käytännössä oltiin vapaita lounaan jälkeen. Silloin oli mahdollista jäädä EF loungeen, missä oli kaikenlaisia pelejä pleikkarista perinteisiin lautapeleihin. Joskus oli ylimääräisiä aktiviteetteja, esimerkiksi käytiin yhdesti elokuvissa. Suurin osa suuntasi kuitenkin ruokakaupan kautta rannalle ottamaan aurinkoa ja kiertelemään St. Raphaëlin keskustaa, joka oli aivan rannan vieressä ja  koostui lähinnä kävelykaduista sekä pienistä kaupoista.

Joka ilta oli järjestetty siis vaikka minkälaista iltaohjelmaa, mutta tuntuu että a) niistä ei tiedotettu tarpeeksi hyvin, b) ne oli järjestetty huonosti, tai c) ketään ei kiinnostanut mennä niihin. Aluksi meille sanottiin, että ilta-aktiviteetit ovat pakollisia, mutta käytännössä me olimme vain paristi mukana niissä. Tosiaan muuten illat menivät joko huvipuistossa, rannalla, keskustassa kierrellessä tai joskus jopa kotona voimia keräillessä.

Kotiintuloaikaa ei noudatettu täysin orjallisesti. Jos ilmoitimme isäntäperheellemme, että tulemme hieman myöhemmin, saimme sitten olla pidempään ulkona. Luultavasti kaikki eivät suhtaudu yhtä joustavasti näihin sääntöihin. Näkemistä oli kyllä niin paljon ja monesti oli aika väsynyt, että en edes olisi jaksanut hengailla koko yötä missään kuitenkaan!

 Tästä jatkuu nyt vielä Ranskan postausten tekeminen, koska siellä on vielä huimasti paikkoja, joista kertoa. Ja joo, vastaan mielelläni teidän kysymyksiin edelleenkin, jos tulee jotain mieleen. Loppuun vielä kiva "valmistumiskuva" Niin mitkä high school musical vaikutteet?

First video from France - rainy days, crazy rides and dancing

My blog has been dead for a while, so I decided it's time to revive it a bit by making a little video.☺ The first video I've ever edited... Every day was full of different kinds of activities, new words and new places. Not to mention new friends! Since our journey lasted for 24 days, you can only imagine how little this video tells about our trip. My "good night's sleep" was approximately 6 hours a day because there was so much to see and do...

Anyway, here it is!

                                      


1. Our home town Saint Raphaël

We were offered access to the EF lounge, which had computers, nintendos, board games and other kinds of activities for us. The lounge was in the school's area and we could spend time there with our new friends after school (mon-fri 12.00-->) I didn't really feel like spending time there because it was boiling hot outside and the beach was close. However, on one of the last days in Saint Raphaël I decided to check it out!

2. Cannes

The city that is famous for its movie festivals! I made a post about the weird art of Cannes earlier on. Click here to read about it. 

To be honest, it wasn't that special. But of course it was fun! We went shopping and saw the place where the celebrities go for their film festival. Something that I won't forget, though, is the bus ride to Cannes. It was the only day of our language course when it rained. And boy did it rain! It was raining cats and dogs and there was lightning in the sky. Many people found it quite scary because the bus was driving high in the mountains, right next to the edge where the sea was.

3. Luna Park 

After reading all the 2/5 reviews on the internet, we wanted to test this amusement park ourselves. All I can say is that it wasn't extremely fun. On the other hand, we didn't really have high expectations about it. There were a few rides that didn't seem to be very secure. All the bumping around hurt my neck. But I don't regret it, not at all! In fact, I returned to Luna Park with some Italian friends just to enjoy the ambiance.

5+1 self-evident things I learned during my trip

I think I've never traveled for three weeks, let alone traveled a lot without my parents. My language trip made me realize some important things. Oh and here's some photos on Saint Raphaël by night.

1. Have the courage to ask for help

Seriously, people will help each other if you're lost. I can't even count the amount of times I was lost all by myself or with my Swedish friends. I wouldn't have made it home without talking to gazillions of other EF students and asking strangers to show directions to different places.Yes, I had a map but I didn't know where my home was. Neither did I know where our bus stop was. Nor the school. Basically I was lost pretty much all the time... Oh well.

Once we had to ask a woman at 1:30 am the way back home. My roommate and I had walked for almost two hours already and were exhausted. We were glad how clearly this woman explained the route to us and was really friendly, even in the middle of the night. She wished us good luck and made sure we understood her directions in French. We really do owe her.

2. Don't be afraid to talk in another language

Boy, how lost I would've been if I hadn't had spoken French in my host family. I don't know how much my host mama would've understood English because we didn't speak it at all. And I'm extremely happy about that. It is good to have an easy conversation in another language, keeping it simple is the key. I was happy, that I understood almost everything my host mama said and she understood me. Well, at least after some minutes of thinking what to reply to her...

It's important to keep in mind, that foreigners don't usually expect you to speak their language perfectly. You never learn if you don't try. I think I made more than enough of mistakes but it doesn't matter. I realized that when I was in a hurry or had to explain something very important, I spoke French much better. Maybe it was because I wasn't really thinking what I was saying. The words just came to my mouth and I hoped that I'd be understood, haha.

3. Live the local manners

Now this means respecting but also imbibing the culture as much as you can. Even if it involves eating white bread and crisps every single day. I just noticed I've never loved rye bread as much as I do now! Also the bathrooms and kitchens were slightly different in France. I found it weird, that I actually couldn't wash my hands in the toilet. You get used to it, though.

Maybe watching the television, listening to the radio or going to the movies can offer a new side of the country. I went to see Man of Steel, of course dubbed in French and ended up sleeping half of the time...I guess I'm not that much into action movies then!Watching Money Drop in the host family almost became a tradition. It was always on from 7pm, which was when we had dinner time. I learned some new words from that show, because it was so easy to follow. Thank you Money Drop French edition!

4. Take care of yourself 

For real, I can't even imagine what could have happened if I hadn't called my roommates constantly. We were always calling to each other about what bus we are taking. Also all the meetings in the cities were only told to us by word of mouth. It was up to us whether we remembered them or not. I was probably one of them who remembered the place and the time, but didn't know how to get there. 

5. Prepare yourself for surprises!

That's to say if you travel with EF. You never knew what you were going to do in the evening or afternoon. Some activities were cancelled or sometimes they changed places. It was annoying, but there was really nothing you could do about it. Once I had to go home in the middle of the school day to change clothes and get my bikini. We were going to a beach called Roches Rouges, which was a bit far away. Anyway, if things are not going the way you want, you shouldn't complain. Staying positive all the time is important. Especially if you're on a holiday, it's meant to be fun!

+1 Remember to use sunscreen!

"I never burn myself" yeah right, that's what I thought also. After I had burned my chest I decided to use a lotion with SPF 10. It actually worked. I didn't burn anymore but I still got a good tan!

Climbing in the trees on a summer day - what a way to spend a day! Rope and tree climbing became one of my favourite activities during our trip. It's something I definitely want to do again! The only thing which made me a bit sad was, that we couldn't do to the course which would've had gliding over a lake. Perhaps it would've been too dangerous or too expensive, I really don't know. Well, the next time I get an opportunity to try climbing and gliding again, I'll take a more difficult course. Maybe the Canary Islands offer these kind of nature adventures. I really hope so!

New friends from all over Europe

My three weeks went as fast as a lightning. I made absolutely wonderful friends from many countries, who I'll probably remember for the rest of my life. I'll be thinking of you with joy, when I'm in a retirement home. Hahaha, thank you so much everybody, I love you. I've always thought, that it's such a richness to have friends in other countries. 

During my trip, this feeling only grew stronger. It's always hard to say goodbye but it just might be worth it. Amongst hundreds of people around Europe, all the cultural differences nothing else but emerged. It was amazing how united I felt with the other Finns. Our language is so weird, that many people wanted to learn it. In favour of teaching, I got to learn some extremely important Italian and German phrases
